This chart should be in every young band's library! Neal Hefti's famous tune is the quintessential slow swing ballad in the Basie style, and every jazzer should be familiar with it. In this superb edition, the arranger has changed the key and reorchestrated the parts so it is playable by ensembles at any ability level, and with reduced instrumentation as well. The notes are easy, but there's more music here than in many more difficult charts. If your students play only a handful of jazz tunes in their life, this should be one of them. 2403087 Jazz Ensemble . . . VE 42.00 Lil' Hefty—Zachary Smith. Ideal for young jazz bands, this moderately slow swinger is a tribute to legendary composer Neal Hefti. Lil' Hefty is a melodic chart with well-noted articulations, written-out rhythm section parts, and written melody solos for trumpet and piano, all at about 80-92 bpm. The trumpet 1 range is to G top of staff and is playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentation. Here's a great little chart for change-of-pace programming and teaching an important jazz style! 10997186 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 42.00 Misty—Erroll Garner/arr. Terry White. Perhaps one of the most familiar jazz standards of all time, this easy but effective chart has a laid-back swing feel. The tempo is 90 bpm with written solos for alto 1 and trumpet 1, and the lead trumpet range goes up to written E-flat top space. It's also playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. This chart delivers! 10355610 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 44.00 Moon River—Henry Mancini/arr. Rick Stitzel. Henry Mancini's beautiful melody has a graceful, lovely quality that makes it wonderful to play. Your young jazz ensemble will take naturally to the 3/4 feel and rich harmonies that make this chart a real delight to perform. 2473683 Jazz Ensemble . . . VE 45.00 Peace of Mind—Peter Sciaino. A calm jazz ballad grounded in harmonic simplicity and melodic openness inspired by Bill Evans' Peace Piece. The chart opens with a flugelhorn solo, with written solos later for alto sax and trumpet, and features accessible brushwork for drums. Manageable ranges and rhythms keep the focus on balance, control, and style, making it an effective contrast piece for concert or festival programming. 11678884 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 50.00 Silhouette in Time—Larry Clark. A laid- back swing ballad for beginning jazz band, inspired by the lush harmonic language of the 1970s. An extended written alto saxophone solo follows a brief introduction, then triplet rhythms and tied figures emphasize steady flow and rhythmic accuracy. Forward motion throughout the chart keeps young players engaged while learning the ballad style. An ideal choice for beginning jazz musicians' first ballad. 11678889 Jazz Ensemble . . . VE 45.00 Skyfall—Adkins & Epworth/arr. John Berry. Perfectly capturing the mood and style of earlier James Bond themes, Adele has worked her magic with the hit Skyfall. John Berry's easy version features a brief written alto sax solo, then solid scoring for the entire ensemble with the melody traded between the saxes and trumpets. Playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations, this is sure to be an audience favorite! Highly recommended! 10374178 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 45.00 So Long...—Chris Clark. Film noir atmosphere sets the scene for this easy jazz ballad, written to feature a bari sax soloist. Harmon mutes for the trumpets and cup mute for the trombones add authentic color, and a brief double-time swing section in the middle provides contrast before returning to the moody ballad feel. The clear form and supportive scoring make it an engaging concert selection great for introducing your early players to performing with a featured soloist. 11678117 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 55.00 Soft and Easy—Terry White. Aptly named, this laid-back swing ballad is a wonderful way to introduce young musicians to this iconic Basie style. Once your band can play an accent on the "and" of one and "fat" (not rushed!) quarter notes on beats three and four, they will be well on their way to sounding great playing music in this style. 11501885 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 45.00 Times Gone By—Doug Beach. Get a glimpse into the past with this nostalgic ballad written to feature a solo instrument as well as your ensemble's dynamic range. This is a great chart to balance any program and slow things down. 11403538 Jazz Ensemble . . . . E 48.00 What a Wonderful World—Douglas & Weiss/arr. Rick Stitzel. Giving your beginning band great tunes like this to play will turn them on to jazz forever! You just can't beat the appeal of the tune Louis Armstrong made so famous, and it's surely stood the test of time. This very playable version is nicely scored where each section gets a piece of the melody. Very highly recommended! 2470819 Jazz Ensemble . . . VE 45.00 Ballads Medium-Easy Afternoon—Pat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns throughout, although trumpets would work just fine. There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/flugel. Very nice! 10162086 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 55.00 Alone Time—Kris Berg. Designed for developing jazz ensembles, this straight-eighth ballad emphasizes lyrical playing as the melody moves through every section of the band. A shift in the middle to a fuller, hard swing feel adds contrast while still maintaining the ballad character. Trumpets begin on flugelhorns before returning to trumpet later in the chart, encouraging warm tone and blend throughout. A strong selection for concert or contest settings to showcase expressive balance and stylistic maturity. 11678929 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 55.00 Angel Eyes—Matt Dennis/arr. Carl Strommen. Oh, yes! This is a superb setting of the iconic jazz ballad that features the alto sax star in your band. The alto solo is mostly written with opportunities to improvise around the melody, and the ensemble gets their chance in the spotlight with some fine full-band passages. The trumpet 1 range is to written E top space with some optional octave-up sections if desired. At 76 bpm, this chart will allow your alto soloist to shine! 10513881 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 48.00 A Ballad for Basie—Doug Beach. With a tip of the hat to the great Neal Hefti, A Ballad For Basie is exactly the type of ensemble ballad that Count Basie was famous for. Featuring mostly full ensemble work, this one asks for everyone to contribute to the melody and to learn this iconic style. A short, written trumpet solo rounds it out. All aspiring jazz musicians will benefit from learning this style! Highly recommended! 10754247 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 55.00 Breathing—Fred Sturm/arr. David Springfield. One of the last original pieces composed by the late Fred Sturm, this may be one of the most beautiful. Sensitively arranged by David Springfield as a quiet ballad concert piece with no improvisation, Breathing will serve well on any concert program as a quiet interlude that will showcase the gracefulness of your ensemble and delight those in your audience. Highly recommended! 10607207 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 45.00 Bridge Over Troubled Water—Paul Simon/arr. Paul Baker. Paul Simon's soulful rock ballad is set here at 88 bpm, and as arranged by Paul Baker is sure to please! The melody is first stated by trumpet 2 and tenor sax, there are no improvised solos, and the trumpet 1 range is to written G on top of the staff. This chart also features great dynamic contrasts and a satisfying vamp toward the end. Optional wind and vibes parts are included for expanded instrumentations. Highly recommended! 10452102 Jazz Ensemble . . .ME 48.00 BEST SELLERS Ballads Medium-Easy Best-Selling Charts!
