lyrical atmosphere unfolds as this high
school band work opens with expressive
solo passages for horn and trumpet.

Rozana—Reena Esmail. Clear phrasing
and imaginative use of color define
this expressive wind ensemble work.

resulting in a sound that feels mature and
confident. The transparent textures highlight
expressive contrast and rich harmonic
language. A strong selection for developing
expressive awareness and musical
sensitivity through accessible material that
sounds mature and purposeful.

Scramble—Todd Stalter. A tumultuous
concert opener or closer intended to depict
two characteristics of the title, the frantic
collecting of things together in a disorderly
way, and darting about quickly with a sense
of urgency. Once the theme is presented
the fun really starts! The action revs up
as the musical "parts" are separated and
combined in unique and haphazard
combinations, all at break-neck speed that
will leave everyone breathless!

original is completely intact and will serve as
a wonderful experience for young bands.

Second Wind (Four Short Episodes
on the Sea)—Cody Jackson. Four short
movements - To the Sea; Securing the
Jib; Broadside Fury and Stormwind - chart
a nautical voyage in this medium-level
concert band work. Predominantly set in
a 6/8 sea-shanty style, the writing shifts to
9/8 for the final intensified scene, packing
complex rhythmic variation and technical
demands into a concise form. A vigorous
closer for high school band that delivers
clear character changes and sustained
rhythmic challenges within an exciting
programmatic design.

Slava!—Leonard Bernstein/arr. Robert
Longfield. The transcription of this exuberant
overture has become a staple of band
repertoire and is a proven programming
favorite. Constructed using two contrasting
themes that combine near the end,

approachable grade level yet still retains the

Sleep—Eric Whitacre. Take a serious
look at this one! Eric Whitacre has crafted
an achingly beautiful work, magnificent in
its broad, sweeping lines and layering of
sound. This haunting chorale begins softly
and slowly blossoms to a powerful climax.

with original text by celebrated American
poet Charles Anthony Silvestri. This is a
superior choice for creating an intimate
moment in your concert performance.

Solas Ane (Yesterday's Joy)—Samuel
Hazo. With a unique blend of flowing lines
and lush textures coupled with dynamic
Celtic drumming, this musical creation is a
very stylized and effective setting for wind
band. Interspersed are quiet moments with
soloistic woodwind lines that contrast nicely
with the emotional full-band passages.

Some treasures are heavy with human
tears—John Mackey. The story of this
work begins with a tragedy, but that's not
where it ends. Although it commemorates
a specific catastrophe, the piece is not
programmatic. Instead, it's a meditation
on grief, transcending elegizing a singular
horrific event and instead representing how
we cope with all tragedies. Beginning with
the peacefulness of a lullaby, the piece takes
a simple motive and transports it through a
series of emotions that include denial, shock,
fury, and anguish before finding acceptance.
Throughout, conflicting harmonies present
an internal turbulence that peaks in a
climactic wail of agony bordering on rage.
Although the ending projects a return to
peace, it is left incomplete with the final
gesture of a single muted trumpet rising
from the silence in a bright flash only to
be suddenly extinguished. - from program
notes by Jacob Wallace

changes throughout. The title honors South
Fork Elementary School, grounding the

or festival opener when you want variety
and confident ensemble sound at the high
school level.

Southern Hymn—Samuel R. Hazo. The
original themes used in this beautiful setting
are intended to be played in the style of a
slow Southern folk hymn, similar to Amazing
Grace or Shenandoah. Using suspensions
and resolutions as well as calm moments
and powerfully emotional builds, this is
a marvelous work for expanding your
ensemble's stylistic and dynamic range.
