S y m p h o n i e E s p a g n o l e ( F i r s t
Movement)—Edouard Lalo/arr. Todd
Parrish. Firmly rooted in the standard
violin repertoire, Symphonie Espagnole is
a brilliant work that showcases the violin's
lyrical beauty and technical virtuosity with
a Spanish style. After keeping the opening
solo passage, the powerful melodies are
then passed throughout the orchestra. The
first movement is arranged here for string
orchestra, shortened and simplified for
playability. However, Lalo's original fiery
masterpiece comes through clearly. The
optional timpani part is highly recommended
to achieve the most authentic sound.

Symphony No. 2 "Romantic" (First
Movement)—Howard Hanson/arr. Todd
Parrish. Symphony No. 2 by Howard
Hanson is one of the most popular
American symphonies ever written, most
famously used in the end credits of the
movie "Alien" in 1979. This arrangement
focuses on the hauntingly beautiful second
theme of the first movement. Cellos are
featured prominently in tenor clef and
often cover the soaring horn solos from
the original. Musicians will experience
true symphonic beauty in this exquisite
arrangement for strings and harp.

Symphony No. 2 (Finale)—Emilie Mayer/
arr. Lauren Taylor. A rare transcription of the
extraordinary music of German composer
Emilie Mayer (1812-1883). While most of
her compositions remained unpublished,
Mayer's works were acclaimed in Germany;
she toured frequently, performing her
music during her lifetime. This stormy final
movement from her second symphony
reveals Mayer's bold and confident style.
This arrangement for string orchestra and
timpani was painstakingly drawn from the
handwritten score, offering a profound
opportunity to experience the music of this
incredible composer for the first time.

Symphony No. 29 (First Movement)—
W.A. Mozart/arr. Robert Debbaut. The
first movement of Mozart's Symphony No.
29 is a lighthearted Allegro moderato that
follows the sonata form typical of his early
symphonies. It's graceful yet playful and a
great representation of the influence of the
Sturm und Drang movement on Mozart's
compositional style. The playful nature
of the work makes this a strong concert
opener and a great introduction for students
to the classical style.

Symphony No. 4, Second Movement—
Johannes Brahms/arr. Michael Hopkins.
This arrangement makes the second
movement of Brahms' masterpiece
accessible to the intermediate-level string
orchestra. The introduction, principal
and secondary themes, a portion of the
development section and recapitulation,
and the coda are included in this abridged
arrangement. The time signature has been
modified from a slow 6/8 to 3/4, and the
key has been changed from E major to D
major. The arrangement features sections
for solo quartet contrasting with the tutti and
captures the rich textures, rhythmic vitality,
and Romanticism of Brahms' original work.

Symphony No. 44 "The Mourning"
(1st Movement)—Joseph Haydn/arr.
Stephen Chin. A faithful arrangement of
the first movement of Haydn's "Mourning"
Symphony for high school string orchestra.

Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Todd Parrish.
All the power of Beethoven's famous Fifth

Symphony No. 6 (First Movement)—
Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Robert D.
McCashin. In Beethoven's words, "the
'Pastoral' symphony is more an expression
of feeling than painting... pleasant feelings
which awaken in men on arriving in the
countryside." A perfect introduction to
Beethoven's major works, the music is
exquisitely orchestrated to retain the true
nature of the original masterpiece while
remaining playable by intermediate students.
