The Abduction from the Seraglio
(Overture)—W.A. Mozart/arr. Jamin
Hoffman. From the comic opera filled with
pirates, Turkish princes, kidnapping and
daring rescues, Mozart's The Abduction
from the Seraglio is the piece of music
that generated the (possibly fictional)
"too many notes" story. It is written in the
Turkish "janissary" style, a style of music
that fascinated Europe at the time. In this
arrangement, the right hand of the piano
is frequently written 8va to help re-create
the piccolo that figured prominently in the
original.

Achieved Is His Glorious Work—Joseph
Haydn/arr. Bud Caputo. Drawn from the
culminating moment of a major Classical
oratorio, this arrangement captures the
sense of completion and celebration.
Originally scored for chorus and full
orchestra, the music has been thoughtfully
adapted for intermediate strings and
transposed to sit comfortably within players'
ranges. Doubling between cello and bass
makes it practical for smaller or unevenly
balanced ensembles while preserving the
original's melodic richness and rhythmic
vitality.

Adagio—Thomaso Albinoni/arr. Jamin
Hoffman. Finally, an arrangement of
Albinoni's most famous work that can be
played at your group's level. This achingly
beautiful music is certainly one of the high
points of all Baroque music. Give your
strings a chance to play this one!

Adagio and Allegro—Ludwig van
Beethoven/arr. R. Scott Whittington.
Created for string ensembles working at
Level 3.5, this offers a wonderful opportunity
for developing players to discover the
brilliant and dramatic composer that is
Ludwig van Beethoven. This arrangement
has been edited and shortened to 4:20 and
has been transposed from its original key
of E-flat major to the more string-friendly
key of D major. It is scored so that it can
be successfully performed if an ensemble
is missing a bass section.

Adagio Cantabile (from "Cinnamon
Grove")—R. Nathaniel Dett/arr. Dión
Morales. This gorgeous arrangement
features the Adagio Cantabile, the second
movement of "Cinnamon Grove" by R.
Nathaniel Dett, who was the first composer
of African descent to graduate from Oberlin
College in 1908. This setting by Dión
Morales conjures powerful emotions as the
stunning harmonies mesmerize listeners
until they are left in tears. Beautiful. (2:45)

Adoration—Florence B. Price/arr. Steve
Olson. Originally composed for organ by
African-American composer Florence B.
Price in 1951. With its slow, expressive
melodies, this piece is a great opportunity
for younger orchestras to work on bow
distribution and vibrato. All parts except for
a small section for the basses are playable
in first position, making it an excellent
transition piece for shifting exercises. The
arrangement captures the beauty and
richness of the original composition.

Allegro agitato—R. Christopher Teichler.
Filled with energy and suspense from
the opening six notes played by the low
strings and through to the final measure,
this is rhythmically charged with dramatic
phrasing and sweeping dynamics. Although
the music is quite expressive, it often feels
turbulent and a sense of unrest creeps in as
the music builds to climactic moments.

Allegro (from "Sinfonia No. 6 in G
Minor")—J.C. Bach/arr. Robert D.
McCashin. Ideal for a concert opener or
closer, this energetic work features strong
rhythms and vibrant harmonies while the
true genius of Johann Christian Bach shines
through. Conductors have the freedom to
choose a tempo that fits their ensemble
without losing the work's engaging nature.
Certain to be a favorite with performers and
audiences!

Andante (from Symphony No. 5)—
Felix Mendelssohn/arr. William LaRue
Jones. This third movement is written in
an operatic aria style, with the first violins
singing the opening lyrical melody over a
pulsating accompaniment. Mendelssohn's
compositional style belongs to the Romantic
period with its more emotional, expressive
qualities. The Andante increasingly engages
each string section, expanding the interplay
of parts and infusing more rhythmic drama
before ending in calm serenity. This is
an excellent composition for students to
develop tone quality, learn the functions of
foreground and background in balancing
parts, and experience the emotional shifts of
a Romantic composition. (3:20)

Andante Festivo—Jean Sibelius/arr.
James Richards. Originally composed
for string quartet in 1922, Andante festivo
was rescored by the composer in 1938 for
string orchestra with timpani. The work
emphasizes the warmth and rich sonority
of the string orchestra, reflecting a
hymnlike ceremonial quality. Broad lyrical
phrases explore a wide range of dynamic
contrast, phrasing, bow distribution, and
orchestral color.

Andantino Grazioso—Ignaz Pleyel/arr.
Loreta Fin. Ignaz Pleyel was born near
Vienna in 1757. He was a favorite pupil
of Haydn, and both Haydn and Mozart
admired his compositions. He wrote a
great quantity of music of every kind, but
is now better known for his violin duets. In
this arrangement from one of those duets,
the melody is passed around the sections.
It is a good introduction to compound time,
A minor, and the tonic major of A. It also
allows the students to explore elegant
Classical bowing styles.

Arietta—Samuel Coleridge-Taylor/arr.
Robert Debbaut. Arietta dates from 1898,
the same year as Coleridge-Taylor's Opus
33 Ballade for Orchestra and his Opus
30 cantata Song of Hiawatha, which is
based on American Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow's epic poem and remains his
most-performed work. While certainly
typical of the late 19th Century, many of
his creations display inspiration by African
musical elements much like dances from
Hungary had inspired Brahms and Native
American melodies and Negro Spirituals
inspired Dvořák's New World Symphony.

Armonico (from Op. 3, No. 10)—Antonio
Vivaldi/arr. Todd Parrish. This faithful

of the original, the iconic first movement
displays the power and focus that helped
this piece stand out among other works
of the same age. A rare and inspired
adaptation.
