Groove, Bow, Groove—Alexandra
Skevington. Jazz-influenced writing gives
this Grade 4 piece its character, with unique
harmonies and tight rhythmic interplay that
challenge students to listen across the
ensemble. The phrasing and syncopation
offer strong opportunities to teach jazz-
style rhythms in a classical string orchestra
setting. Multiple rhythmic layers make
rehearsal coordination part of the learning
curve, and the blend of pizzicato, bowing,
and blues-influenced gestures keeps the
piece feeling fun. A fantastic selection for
something with a lighter feel.

arrangement transports students to a world
where jazz and Baroque styles unite in
perfect harmony.

Jasmine Flower—arr. Douglas Wagner.
Here is a very beautiful setting of the
traditional Chinese folk song Molihua. This
tune is a vital part of Chinese New Year
celebrations and was featured at the 2004
Summer Olympics. The soothing pentatonic
melody is reminiscent of the simple beauty
of the lovely white jasmine blossom and
its delightful scent. Players will encounter
no technical impediments in performance.
The independent piano accompaniment

elementary string orchestra arrangement of

Light. Rhythmic unison across the orchestra
strengthens ensemble precision, while

pizzicato, marcato and legato playing, easy
double stops, and a variety of dynamic
opportunities. A great piece as an opener

Phillips. Three beautiful tunes in an easy
medley! This collection is a set of three
traditional Mexican folk songs arranged
for beginning string orchestra. The entire
piece can be played on the D and A strings
for violins, violas, and cellos, while basses
play on the D and G strings. A la Rorro Niño
("To the Darling Child") is an infant slumber
song. Un Elefante Se Balanceaba ("One
Elephant Balances") is about an elephant
balancing on a spider web with more
elephants joining as the song progresses;
for example, the second verse would be two
elephants, the third verse would be three
elephants, and so on. Luz de la Mañana
("Morning Light") is a children's song about
morning. Correlates to Sound Innovations,
