Dhyaana—Manjula Ramachandran &
Cooper Ford. This is the perfect piece to
introduce students to some of the unique
sounds and basic techniques of Indian
music. Authentically written and musically
engaging, it features a strong melody and
deliberate rhythmic drive. Dhyaana is a
Sanskrit word translated as contemplation or
meditation. This is an aspect of Indian culture
that cultivates serenity, focus, and self-
awareness, often through music. Written in
the Carnatic (South Indian) musical tradition,
this piece uses melodic patterns from the
raga Revathi as well as common rhythmic
patterns often found in this style. Each part
also includes some introductory gamakas,
ornamentations that are a foundational part
of this style and are marked clearly with
appropriate fingerings. (2:25)

Dungeon's Stairwell and Devil's
Dream—Gayley Hautzenroeder. Built
around a traditional fiddle tune, this string
orchestra piece includes an introduction that
reinforces D minor and D major tetrachords
along with half- and whole-step patterns.
Extended fingerings, curved left-hand

fiddling passages approachable, making
the work both practical and rewarding for
intermediate string players.

Ear-igami—Richard Meyer. Ear-igami is
a fascinating musical tribute to the ancient
Japanese art of paper folding. Instead of
a bow, each performer uses a piece of
paper to make sounds and to "play" their
instrument. Your audience will be entranced
as they watch and hear the variety of effects
possible in this charming set of pentatonic
variations. A unique concert selection!

Fantasia on a Theme from Thailand—
Richard Meyer. This captivating work is a
set of variations on the Pong Lang Dance,
one of Thailand's most popular melodies.
The pong lang is like a xylophone with
its wooden keys suspended vertically on
ropes, with the low notes on the upper
end and the high notes at the bottom. The
melody uses the pentatonic scale and
is very simple in nature. The variations
expand on fragments of the original tune
in a variety of tempi and styles that make
each new change thrilling! After this
exploration, the original melody returns,
gradually gaining speed and energy as one
would hear in a traditional performance of
this dance.

Fantasy on "Aloha 'Oe"—Queen
Lili'uokalani/arr. Brian Balmages. This
gorgeous fantasy is based on the well-

a part of an emotional send-off to celebrate
graduating students. Beautiful harmonic
twists are masterfully intertwined in a work
that is extremely accessible to younger
students yet sounds mature enough to be
enjoyed by more accomplished ensembles.
