Cape Cod Shanty—arr. Dan Adams.
Centuries-old sea shanties made the drudgery
and monotony of a sailor's work more
tolerable. Sung on the decks of merchant,
fishing, and whaling ships, these often colorful
songs have become an important part of our
folk music history. This is a full orchestra
arrangement of Cape Cod Girls, a call-and-
response song with some interesting lyrics.
If you were seaman, you surely would have
sung many creative verses

The Iron Horse—Robert Debbaut. Inspired
by the steam engine's role in the western
American frontier, this character piece
for orchestra draws on both history and
folklore. A four-note motive permeates
the score, shaping melodic and harmonic
development throughout. Pentatonic
writing evokes the soundscape of Native
American folk traditions set against driving
war-drum rhythms and the relentless
pulse of thundering trains. The result is
a vivid musical portrait built on contrast,
momentum, and tightly unified material.

Kyiv, 2022 (A Sequel to Moscow, 1941)—
Brian Balmages. Written as a powerful
sequel to Moscow, 1941, this work changes
the narrative: the theme from Moscow now
represents the aggressor, and the heroic
people of Ukraine are represented by the
Ukrainian national anthem and the powerful
song Prayer for Ukraine. Certain to spark
discussions about humanity, history, and
culture, this piece can easily be performed
alongside Moscow, 1941 or in place of it.
All net proceeds of the initial release are
going to relief organizations on the ground
in Ukraine.

Land o' the Leal—arr. Dan Adams. A
collector of folk tunes, Lady Nairne (Carolina
Oliphant) undoubtedly chose the traditional
Scottish air "Hey, Tuttie, Tattie" as the
setting for her melancholy text because of
its beauty and simplicity. Also known as the
melody to Robert Burns' nationalistic "Scots
Wha Hae", the folk tune has been part of
Scottish life for centuries. Lady Nairne wrote
her words upon the passing of the only
child of her friend, Mrs. Archibald Campbell
Colquhoun. In her setting, Land O' The
Leal is a reference to heaven, where they
will someday be reunited. This orchestral
arrangement of the old Scottish tune hopes
to capture the serenity and hopefulness of
her poem.

Leviathan Rising—Joshua Reznicow.

Leviathan, an ancient creature said to rise
from the ocean's depths to bring chaos
and destruction. Complete with intense
driving motives, sweeping lyrical lines, and
a cinematic style reminiscent of Hollywood
film scores, this piece is scored to be
technically accessible to all sections of the
intermediate orchestra. Sure to capture the
imagination of performers and audiences
alike while showing off the power of the
orchestra.

Majestic Fields—Joshua Reznicow.
Coming out of the 2020 pandemic when
schools, ensembles, and music classes
either rehearsed sporadically or not at
all, the organizers of the Big 9 Festival in
Austin, Minnesota wanted to commission a
piece that would help celebrate the return to
in-person learning and music making.

A Matador's Tale—Mark Lortz. With
traditional Spanish flair, this programmatic
work depicts a bullfight, beginning with
the matador's fanfare entrance. After the
various stages of the fight, the music comes
to a rousing end. The many doublings in this
intermediate work allow orchestras to play it
with missing instrumentation.
