Folk Songs | Madrigals
The Wellerman—arr. Jacob Narverud. This
19th-century folk song from New Zealand
experienced new life as a viral hit on
TikTok and spawned the sea-shanty trend.
The ballad tells the story of the hopeful
inhabitants of a whaling village waiting for
the Wellerman ship to bring supplies. This
rousing arrangement is great fun and highly
accessible – it can be performed with either
the piano accompaniment or a cappella.
With so many voicing options, it can be
effectively performed by choirs of all ages,
from elementary, middle, or high school to
community choirs.
