Furusato—arr. Bob Chilcott. A collection
of five Japanese song arrangements, this
edition includes the Japanese texts in the
score and separately as an appendix along
with English singing translations by prize-
winning poet Charles Bennett. Each song in
the collection is separately available digitally.
Furusato is a popular Japanese children's
song, for which the composer and lyricist
weren't credited until 1992, 78 years after
it was published. Momiji, meaning "Autumn
Leaves," was composed by Teiichi Okano
(1878-1941) with lyrics from Tatsuyuki
Takano (1876-1947). Mura Matsuri is a song
of the traditional Japanese festival Matsuri.
Oborozukiyo was originally composed for
soprano, flute, and harp in 1914; it was
taught in Japanese schools and is still
sung today. Sunayama translates as "Sand
Mountain" and refers to a beach on Japan's
Miyako Island where there is an abundance
of white sand and warm tropical waters.
