H udolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer—Johnny
R
Marks/arr. Sharp. Take your band on a tour of
musical styles as everyone's favorite Christmas
song gets a special treatment by arranger Chris
Sharp. Opening with a slow trumpet solo a la
Harry James, it soon breaks into an uptempo
swing that will have everyone's toes tappin'! Then,
it goes alternating through Rock, Swing, and
Salsa styles before it finally makes a big, bluesy,
big band finish. Highly recommended!

T
he Nutcracker Suite (Nine-Movement
Suite)—arr. Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington/
ed. Lindberg. This authentic edition of
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, as arranged in
1960 by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington, was
assembled from the original manuscripts held
in the Strayhorn Repository and the Ellington
Collection of the Smithsonian Institution's
National Museum of American History. For
purposes of accuracy, the manuscripts were
cross-checked carefully with the original
Duke Ellington Orchestra recording. Edited
by Jeff Lindberg, this nine-movement suite
is part of the Jazz Legend Series.

o Tannenbaum! (O Tannenbaum)—arr.

Gordon Goodwin. Holiday jazz by Gordon
Goodwin? Yes... and this adaptation of O
Tannenbaum is quite an adventure! Offering a
chorale, some Basie style and fast and furious
Goodwin bebop, this is not your ordinary holiday
jazz chart. There's solo space for alto and
tenor sax, trumpet and trombone. The optional
doubles are flute for 2nd alto sax, lead alto has
either a standard alto part or an optional part for
alto with a soprano double. An extremely exciting
chart as performed by The Big Phat Band.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing—arr. Gordon Goodwin. More accessible
than some of his charts, Gordon Goodwin gives this traditional holiday tune a jazz waltz
treatment. The features include: a soprano sax lead part (alternate alto 1 part included), a
2nd alto part with flute double (alternate 2nd alto sax only part included) and solo space
for soprano sax (or alto), alto 2, and tenor 1. The lead trumpet range is only to a high D.
While not recorded by "The Big Phat Band," it's a holiday staple for live performances.

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!—Jule Styne/arr. Alan Baylock.
This swinging holiday arrangement is a slightly easier version of the chart that Alan
Baylock did for the USAF Airmen of Note. It features the saxes in a "four brothers" setting
with written solo space provided for each of the five saxes if desired. The lead trumpet
range is to written B above the staff and there are parts included for optional expanded
instrumentations. Here's a Christmas chart with substance!

Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming—arr. Bob Curnow. With a nod to the
wonderful Dave Maddux arrangement written for the vocal group First Call, Bob Curnow
has created a gorgeous version for big band. Every jazz group needs Christmas charts
to perform, and this one is beautiful in its simplicity and overall effect. It begins quietly
in a jazz chorale style and gradually builds to a dramatic climax followed by a sonorous
ending. There are no solos. Turn off the house lights, put the spotlight on your band, and
you will be able to hear a pin drop when you finish this beautiful arrangement.

Placid—Rick Hirsch. As its title
suggests, Placid is a peaceful, restful ballad.
Take your audiences to a quiet, clear night
with a fresh blanket of snow as the lovely
melody carries through the entire piece, and

are echoes of a Charlie Brown Christmas
here. Improvised solo options are available

and rhythm, with optional parts for flugelhorn,
