Composed in the spirit of folk music,
the cantata combines traditional
sounds with more rustic elements,
creating a blend that is fresh and
pleasing. Popular American carols like
Away in a Manger and O Little Town
of Bethlehem dance with traditional
spirituals such as Children, Go Where
I Send Thee and Go, Tell it on the
Mountain. Sacred Harp tunes are retooled for Advent and stand alongside
new versions of Shaker hymns and
Appalachian melodies. Thoughtful
narration weaves the movements
together in a meaningful tapestry of
song and Scripture. Two orchestral
options are available allowing
maximum flexibility in performance.

and Expectation; Carol of the Winter

Written especially for developing
choirs, this festive SA(T)B cantata is
overflowing with joyful seasonal songs
ideal for smaller ensembles. Original
material mingles with traditional carols
in a jubilant mix, crafted to create
large musical impact with minimal
numbers and rehearsal time. The
musical variety ranges from galloping
gospels, to contemporary ballads, from
joyful carols to tender manger lullabies.
Larger groups can take advantage of
the cued notes for richer sonorities and
still enjoy the sensitive care taken to
minimize awkward passages for quick
learning. A flexible narration allows
thoughtful directors to customize their
programs while optional orchestral
support brings appropriate instruments
to the programming of this innovative
cantata for Christmas. The cantata can
even be done progressively throughout
Advent and completed during
Christmas celebrations. Songs include:

Opening the musical is the
familiar carol, O Holy Night,
setting the scene of majesty and
wonder as the babe, Jesus, is
born. This lovely work includes
the traditional carols: Joy to the
World; O Come, All Ye Faithful;
Rise Up, Shepherd and Follow
and many more, but also
includes exciting new material,
too. There are performance
options such as dramatic use of
candles during the performance
and even two possible endings
