antasy on a Pyrenean Hymn—David R.
Holsinger. This celebratory work is based in part
on the popular and favorite hymn Immaculate
Mary. The tune is that of a traditional Pyrenean
melody and is a splendid subject for this
spectacular setting. The sparkling technique
and rhythmic drive will make this a favorite
showcase for upper level groups.

Paul Murtha. This tribute to generations of
American servicemen and women buried at
Arlington National Cemetery is a powerful
and emotional work fitting for any memorial
occasion or concert. Offstage trumpets
announce the opening theme followed by
a solemn statement of My Country, 'Tis of
Thee. It gradually builds, reaching a heroic
climax with the familiar hymn God of Our
Fathers before returning to a quiet and
reflective mood.

ridge of the Gods—James Curnow. A
dramatic three-movement symphonic poem
presenting the colorful legend of the Native
American Klickitatst about the origins of the
volcanic mountains of the Cascade range
and legendary bridge. The first movement
"Saghalie" pays tribute to the powerful chief
of all gods and is based on a majestic fanfare
theme. The second movement captures the
beauty of the maiden "Loowit" with haunting
flute and english horn solos accompanied
by soft chanting voices. The final movement
"Tanmahawis" utilizes stark clusters, jagged
melodic fragments and rhythmic percussive
energy as it depicts the destruction of the
mighty bridge.

Call to Celebration—David R. Holsinger.
Two favorite Phi Mu Alpha fraternity songs are
highlighted in this short fanfare. The Sinfonia
Anthem is an energetic march-like song written
in 1908, and Sinfonian Hymn is a serene and
introspective melody. Their unlikely placement
in one short fanfare was just the challenge
the composer needed to unite them in this
spectacular concert opener.

The traditional folk tunes The Blackberry
Blossom and The Girl I Left Behind Me paint
a charming picture of turn-of-the-century life
in rural Northern Ireland. This brilliant concert
band transcription captures all the sparkle and
charm of the original. An Irish treasure!

T
A collection of four separate movements, each
with its own special style and meaning. Violet
Crown Fanfare captures the movement of
the heavens and optimism of the wide open
West. Night on Fire suggests the wild dancing
of a nomadic camp. Unquiet Spirits is a waltz
of longing and otherworldly sweetness. The
Ringmasters March is a riotous, Ivesian circus
parade that closes the piece with an exuberant,
joyful noise.

Hazo. A stunning and inspired work for mature
players. The title (taken from the Latin phrase
Jubilate Deo) is indicative of the pervading
sense of ceremony and jubilation. A broad and
powerful fanfare opens and closes while the
exuberant allegro section features a spirited
pulse with mixed meters and soaring melodies.
Dynamic percussion is inherent throughout and
propel the work to the dramatic finish.

Let the Amen Sound—Travis J. Cross.
Based on the 17th-century chorale Lobe den
Herren, known in English as "Praise to the
Lord." The hymn tune is stated first by a solo
flute accompanied by percussion and muted
trumpets evoking the sound of liturgical bells.
Three variations follow that represent the playful
exuberance of childhood, the sentimental
dance of youth, and the triumphant celebration
of lives well lived. A dramatic and rewarding
addition to the wind band repertoire.

l Nulli Secundus—James Curnow. This
major work honors the memory and legacy
of renowned conductor and educator Harry
Begian. In consideration of Dr. Begian's
Armenian heritage, Nulli Secundus ("second to
none") is a suite of three variations based on the
Armenian folk song Cilicia (My Homeland).

l Pacifica—Robert Buckley. The idea for
Pacifica came from an automobile trip down
the coastal road of the west coast of North
America from Vancouver to San Francisco.
This area is alive with stunning vistas, pristine
beaches and animal life. The composer was
watching the eagles soaring overhead and
wondered what all of this would look like from
the eagle's perspective - through the eyes of an
eagle. Experience the mighty Pacific coast from
an entirely new perspective.

for a wild ride with this work inspired by the
story of the first woman stagecoach driver for
the famous Wells Fargo stage line. Her first time
to "take the ribbons" or reins was at age 14, in
a harrowing night run alone through dangerous
and untamed country. The music is unrelenting
in conveying the sense of a high speed race,
careening through the night with danger lurking
around every bend. Absolutely breathtaking!
