4 rtistry in Rhythm—Stan Kenton/arr. Paul
A
Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan
Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became
his signature and a true classic from the big
band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted
and truncated this for younger players while
maintaining the flavor and energy of the
original. Solo piano starts things off followed
by the iconic trombone solo in the medium
Latin section. The exciting double time swing
section features the entire ensemble, then the
maestoso theme returns to close things out.
Impressive!

4 Jam Blues—Duke Ellington/arr. Mark
Taylor. Here is a new and creative new take
on this Duke Ellington favorite set in a New
Orleans street beat style. A piano introduction
sets up the groove then a small group takes the
initial statement of the theme. The rest of the
ensemble enters with a counterline before the
full ensemble launches the solo section which
is designed to feature any number of soloists.
Unique and effective!

H Autumn Leaves—arr. Peter Blair. This is a
great old tune! Except...there's nothing "old"
sounding about it. It's a medium swing version
of a marvelous, often-played standard that
opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is
filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes
are featured on a chorus and there is a written
or ad lib solo for piano.

At around 152 bpm, here's a swinging, happy
toe tapper in the Basie tradition that just won't
quit, and is a great concert or contest selection
for mid level bands! A written piano solo starts
things out, followed by one, or all of the saxes
introducing the melody. Then the brass join
in and the full ensemble plays to a basic 12bar blues solo section for any instrument. The
ensemble sections, solis and dynamics that
follow are first rate and provide lots of contrast
and excitement. There's even more than one
shout chorus. Just when you think it's over, it
keeps a good thing goin'!
