4 Colossus—Larry Clark. As the title implies, this
piece is intended to sound huge, even though
it is written for the youngest of students. The
piece is set in a fanfare style with strong open
intervals, but the technical demands have been
limited for beginning players. Some tension
chords with dissonant notes are used to add
to the drama of the piece. A very sophisticated
sounding piece for young players!

4 Omicron—Sean O'Loughlin. Beginners will
enjoy playing this edgy concert selection.
Carefully placed accents make the opening
section sound like it is in 3, even though the
entire piece is in 4. Not only is this a good way to
work on counting, but it also has an interesting
melodic line and it's easy to play. A perfect
combination for the youngest of players!

4 Expressions—Bill Calhoun. Thick, lush chords
are heard throughout this gentle, tender piece
for young players. As the title implies, it is a
study in expression, which challenges the
ensemble's command of bow speed and
vibrato. Its chorale-like nature makes use of
non-chord tones to project its emotion, asking
each performer to play with maximum ensemble
awareness and sensitivity. This gorgeous piece

warrior is depicted in sound with this aggressive
piece. It opens with a fanfare-like statement
that is based on open harmonic structures, then
charges into the main theme. The violin melody
features long quarter notes in contrast to the
staccato notes in the accompaniment. There is

l Afterthoughts—Brian Balmages. Cleverly
titled, this three movement work features
original music in the style of famous composers
from different periods in classical music. The
first movement, After Beethoven, follows the
form and style of the opening movement of his
5th Symphony. The second movement, After
Tchaikovsky, evokes stylistic elements from
the 2nd movement of his 5th Symphony along
with his piano nocturnes. The final movement,
After Bartok, combines the aggressive sound of
his Allegro Barbaro with the epic nature of his
Concerto for Orchestra. A wealth of teaching
and musical opportunities!

Set in a minor key utilizing an eerie opening,
imaginative chord progressions, and plunging,
