Jack Wilds. In the tradition of the jousts of the
Middle Ages, this work begins with a solemn
invocation. The percussion builds to a full
ensemble anticipating the battle, and the
clarinets take over with a driving rhythm as the
joust begins. Two themes are layered over each
other, with the first theme finishing victoriously.
This dramatic work is guaranteed to capture
your students' imaginations!

tuneful march refers to the tree that the king

4 Seconds Out—Samuel R. Hazo. In boxing,
the term "seconds out" refers to the moment
when coaches and trainers must be out of
the ring, leaving the competitors alone to
face the competition. In a similar vein, this
composition provides a musical description
of the challenges and triumphs of students
as they transition from middle to high school,
leaving their "seconds" (parents, mentors, etc.)
behind to face life on their own terms. Featuring
a strong sense of urgency, it is solidly written
for inexperienced ensembles with plenty of tutti
scoring, and sections of contrasting dynamics
and effective percussion writing.

dark and mischievous world of shadows is
