Exceptional Repertoire for
Concert and Festival
Here are the best-selling titles of last year's concert/festival season, including standard
editions and newer works with the potential to become standards. Many of these titles have
already earned "Basic Library" status, and others are destined to join their ranks as they
continue to suit the needs of choral directors year after year!
Al Shlosha D'varim—Allan Naplan.
Now available for mixed voices and piano, Al
Shlosha D'Varim is a lyrical setting of the popular
maxim from Jewish morality laws, translated to
mean: "The world is sustained by three things:
by truth, by justice, and by peace." Originally
published for SA voices, this has become a
standard in the choral repertoire.

Bonse Aba—arr. Victor C. Johnson.
Sizzling with celebratory rhythmic energy, this
African folksong loosely translates as: "Those
who sing have the right to be called the children
of God." The only accompanying instruments
are hand drum (treble drum), djembe (bass
drum), and shaker, which add authentic flavor
and opportunities for improvisation. The vocal
parts are easily learned due their repetition and
call-and-response style. Highly recommended!

arr. Andrew Fischer. Here is an exuberant
a cappella number that's loaded with African
atmosphere! The traditional Zambian words
are sung throughout, with such a buoyant

but may be repeated as many times as desired.
Various voicing options are possible, and
African percussion may be added as the piece
progresses. Your choir will definitely want to
improvise some celebratory whoops and shouts!
Highly recommended!

century hymn is possibly the most heartfelt
musical pronouncement of American patriotism.
Divisi sections in all parts are accessible and
still richly expressive with harmonic colors and
sweeping dynamic contrasts. Emotional and
highly effective, it is a truly magnificent setting
that may be performed with band or orchestral
accompaniment. It's also the one chosen most
often by U.S. military ensembles.

in a world torn by war, this poignant a cappella
setting of an original text is filled with striking

dark stormy hour, the wind, it stirs. The scorched
earth cries out in vain... But music and singing
have been my refuge, and music and singing
shall be my light..."

poems by Rainer Maria Rilke entitled Les
Chansons des Roses. With velvet choral lines and
a pensive mood, it is a deeply expressive musical
statement for more accomplished choirs.

is lush, expressive, and perfectly fashioned for
the text. "If music be the food of love, sing on,

appropriate.

Kusimama is written in a world-music style that
is accessible for choirs, both young and old,
that are just beginning to be exposed to world
rhythms and language - a sort of introduction
to new languages, syllables, body percussion
and style. The text in both Swahili and English
is about standing tall on the earth, not with
anger or aggression, but with hope, strength,
acceptance, and positivity. The voices, along
with hand claps, stomps, djembe, shaker and
piano, all combine for an exciting world-music
presentation. Highly recommended!
