Masterworks of Choral Literature
Superior choral groups are never far from their classical roots, and choral
musicians continually look for new editions or transcriptions of pieces from
earlier centuries. These representative works by master composers have
withstood the test of time, and they are presented here in updated editions
designed for today's choirs.
Adoramus Te—G.P. da Palestrina/
arr. John Leavitt.
The expressiveness of the
Renaissance is richly portrayed in this clean edition of
Palestrina's classic masterwork. At only one and a half
minutes in duration, this is an excellent choice for young
a cappella choirs. It belongs in every choral library!

Air and Alleluia—J.S. Bach/arr. Tom Fettke.
Gentle "alleluias" serve as the text for this artful setting
of Bach's Air on the G String. The work exudes an air
of peacefulness and quiet devotion, full of wonderful
teaching opportunities. Highly recommended!

Ave Maria—Jacob Arcadelt/arr. John Leavitt.
Attributed to the Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer
Jacob Arcadelt, this a cappella work for men's voices
will be a joy to rehearse and perform. Not difficult, this is
excellent serious literature for male choirs!

Bring Us Peace (Da Pacem Domine)—
Melchior Franck/arr. Spevacek.
This lovely, late
Renaissance/early Baroque work is complemented
by a new, contemporary English text for general use
by school choirs, and also a soaring descant which
adds to the emotional impact. The English text, a
powerful call for peace, is not intended to be a literal
translation of the original Latin (which is also included
as a performance option). Whether performed
accompanied or a cappella, this piece provides a
marvelous masterwork experience for young and
developing choirs!

Canon Gloria—Michael Haydn/arr. Moore.
Donald Moore is a master when it comes to adapting
classic canons for young voices, and this is an
excellent example of his work. A light, flowing piano
accompaniment supports singable vocal lines on a
simplified version of the traditional "Gloria" text. The
accompaniment is playable by a student musician, as
is the optional part for flute or other C instrument. This
will be a rewarding experience for your young choir!
Highly recommended!

Canon!—Johann Pachelbel/arr. Alan Billingsley.
Would Pachelbel approve? Who knows. But singers
and audiences surely will! This rhythmic rendition
presents the famous "Canon in D" with nonsensical
scat syllables. Sing a cappella or with the optional
piano accompaniment. It's guaranteed to be the most
memorable three minutes of any concert program.

Classic Alleluia Canon (from "Nina")—
Giovanni Paisiello/arr. Liebergen.
Set entirely
on "Alleluia," this trio from the opera "Nina" reveals
Paisiello's ability to compose tuneful melodies and
simple harmonies with traditional cadences. It's a
straightforward round, requiring little more than a one-
octave range from any voice part.

Come Away, Sweet Love—Thomas Greaves/
arr. John Leavitt.
This delightful five-voice madrigal
from 1604 is outstanding! Echo effects and lots of
interplay among the parts make the most of the musical
imagery of "running in and out." This is guaranteed fun
to rehearse and perform! Highly recommended!

Das Glaut zu Speyer—Ludwig Senfl/
arr. Tom Shelton.
Within his lifetime, Ludwig
Senfl composed numerous German lieder, Das
Glaut zu Speyer being one of them. One can truly
hear the sound of the bells of Speyer as this
a cappella arrangement speeds along, each voice
part getting the chance to mimic the sounds of the
bells. Performance of this arrangement will require
sensitivity to the Renaissance choral style and will be
a fun challenge for your singers.

Die Nachtigall (The Nightingale)—
Felix Mendelssohn/arr. Robinson.
There's no
better way to celebrate the birth of Felix Mendelssohn
than with this flexibly scored arrangement of one
of his best-known works. With optional notes for
unchanged boys' voices, it is equally effective with
middle school or high school choirs, accompanied
or a cappella, in German or English. The excellent
performance notes help to make this as educationally
rewarding as it is beautiful!

Down Among the Dead Men—
arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams/adapt. Emily
Crocker.
One of Vaughan Williams' most popular
arrangements for men's voices is now available in this
adaptation for younger male voices with piano. Despite
the morbid title, it is a comical farce, with interweaving
vocal lines and lots of opportunities for expression.

Evening Prayer (from "Hansel and Gretel")—
arr. Audrey Snyder.
Treble choirs always enjoy
singing this gorgeous melody from Humperdinck's
"Hansel and Gretel." In this setting, clarity and
simplicity of the musical lines are what make it so
perfect as a teaching piece, and so rewarding as a
performance feature for young voices.

Gloria (from "Mass in G")—Franz Schubert/
arr. Russell Robinson.
Here is an accessible edition
of the famous Gloria movement from the Schubert
masterwork, originally composed in D Major, lowered
to the key of C, with a somewhat simplified orchestral
reduction in the piano accompaniment. Some cued
notes and optional breath marks are added to aid
the director and singer. This is choral literature of the
highest quality that is perfect for contest or festival use!

Gloria (from "Paukenmesse")—F.J. Haydn/
arr. Russell Robinson.
Consisting only of the Vivace
section of the Gloria from "Paukenmesse," or "Mass
in Time of War," this arrangement is transposed down
a minor third to A Major, and the piano reduction of
the orchestra parts has been made more accessible.
Perfect for the junior high festival chorus, this is first-
rate classical music for developing choirs!

Je Ne Fus Jamais Si Aise—Pierre Certon/
arr. Jerry Estes.
Pierre Certon's dancing and
lighthearted work is made more accessible for
younger voices with this fine arrangement. The
harmonic and textural elements remain true to the
original, preserving the frivolity of the piece. You
may choose to sing only the French text and end at
the optional fine, or extend the length and continue
singing using the English text. Add the flute and
percussion parts to create the perfect performance.

May)—Ottorino Respighi/arr. Robert Sieving.

century poem with music from Respighi's brilliant
"Ancient Aires and Dances for Lute, Suite 1: Balletto"
to create a light-hearted, dance-like representation of
a charming lute piece.

Lascia Chio Pianga—arr. Russell Robinson.
Singers have long cherished this staple of the solo
repertoire, and now it is beautifully set for choral
groups of any size. Teach all of the same lessons
you learned from your favorite vocal instructor as you
share this Baroque aria with a new generation. Not
difficult, but rewarding.

Baroque feel, and full of joy!
