Putting The Pieces Together

This exciting collection consists of a series of key-related scales, arpeggios, interval
and rhythm studies, and chorale exercises for the easy to medium-easy level.
Exercises are written in "score" form, for a full understanding of how the parts work
together. Students enjoy "putting the pieces together" to hear what it sounds like—
very much a musical puzzle. The consistency of the arrangements let the director
guide students skillfully through various techniques. For instance, line A presents
the scale in half notes, with the percussion book being non-rudimental. Line B
presents the scale in thirds with the percussion beginning simple rudiments including
flams, rolls, and diddles. Lines C and D contain more challenging technique and
rhythmic exercises, geared towards the medium-easy level player who's ready to
move on to more difficult material. These provide the "final piece to the puzzle."
Other features include chorales written in score format so you have complete flexibility
in assigning parts. The chromatic scales are written to work on a different range
for technique development. This is a well thought out, comprehensive system of
learning 16 major and minor key signatures that makes an excellent warm-up for
rehearsals or lessons.

Tone And Technique
Through Chorales And Etudes James Ployhar & George Zepp.
This wonderful book continues and expands the concepts in Jim Ployhar's highly
successful I Recommend band study. Each of the first 24 pages begins with a well-
known chorale, followed by an etude focusing on various articulations, rhythmic
patterns, styles or other important points of practice. The beauty of these etudes,
however, is that in addition to being presented in unison, they are also written with
simple accompaniments- 4-part accompaniments for 18 of them and duet parts for
the other 6. This means that you can focus on certain sections of the band while still
involving everyone. You can turn a useful exercise for a few into a rewarding musical
experience for all! These studies are carefully selected, time-honored etudes by
masters such as Arban, Klose, Concone, Shanti, Pares and Saint-Jacome.
Following these etudes, there are scale studies for brasses only and woodwinds only,
with the brasses playing accompaniments to the woodwind studies and vice versa.
