Saucedo. Composed in 12/8 at an energetic
tempo, this masterful work is a tribute to the
late Sir Malcolm Arnold, one of the most notable
English composers of our time. The opening section
features short solo statements of the theme which
lead to well-timed and impressive declarations from
the entire ensemble. Playfully solemn moods are
skillfully captured in a brief yet impressive manner.
An excellent choice for a concert opener.

Milburn. Four of America's greatest hymntunes are
presented here in a masterful four-movement suite.
Prelude on Wondrous Love opens with a chant-like
statement in the euphoniums before proceeding
to an energetic setting. Ballad on Balm in Gilead
features a rich jazz harmonization of this familiar
spiritual. Scherzo on Nettleton (Come, Thou Fount
of Every Blessing) provides rhythmic playfulness
throughout. The piece concludes with March on
Wilson (When We All Get to Heaven), which features
many textures and contemporary harmonies. This
work is a wonderful way to share the richness of
American hymntunes with all listeners.
