There are no individual solos, a hot sax soli, and the lead trumpet range is to written G on top of the staff (optional Ab). It also has options for reduced or expanded instrumentations. Much like Basie's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers compostion exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour. Set in a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. This great Oliver Nelson tune from the early '60s was originally recorded by a small group. Here, it's arranged for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing feel, this chart has a bluesy shuffle feel while providing a nice, unexpected variation to the standard blues changes. There's solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this edited version, the solos are written out with changes provided, the high trumpet parts are eliminated, and the saxophone rhythms are made easier to play. There's tons of great ensemble writing, suggested solos for the horns are provided, and nice textural variety is featured throughout. A New Orleans street parade comes to life with this chart! A 2nd line snare drum beat drives the Dixie-based ensemble, complete with tailgate trombone. There are written solos for trombone, alto sax, plunger trumpet, and bass, and tuba may be substituted for the bass for even more authenticity. An additional clarinet part is included as well. An exchange between the drums and ensemble leads to a roll off that launches the shout section and traditional ending. The trumpet range goes to written high G and trombone to F. Highly recommended! 10458467 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40.00 The Second Time Around (Edited Version)—arr. Billy Byers. Much like the arrangements of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with some of their best music ever recorded. From their album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that will stretch the group to play both very loud and very soft, and is definitely an all-time favorite. In this edited version, the high brass parts have been eliminated, the trumpet and piano solos have been written out, and the rhythm section parts are fully notated. Every band should have this in their library! 10455884 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 South Street Blues—Jeff Jarvis. Good time swingin' is the best way to describe this medium-easy chart set at around 138 bpm. Whether your ensemble has some experience or is in the developmental stages, this chart is suitable for all performance situations, particularly festivals. All horn sections get to shine, including trumpet and trombone section solis without rhythm, and a sax section soli taking it to a discreet finale. All instruments have interesting parts to play, the parts are well articulated, the ranges are reasonable, and the rhythm section parts are notated with chord symbols provided. Due to the accessible blues progression, everyone is encouraged to get into the spotlight using the provided solo sheets. Michael Sweeney. Set in a distinctive medium swing/shuffle groove, Michael Sweeney's version for younger jazz bands presents a contemporary styling of this classic song from "Porgy and Bess." Mixing a variety of ensemble textures, a stop time solo section, and briefly slipping into a new key during the final chorus, this is sure to be a standout for festival or casual concert use. Miles Davis often used this signature riff tune to close his concert sets. Using background figures and other elements from the original recordings, Paul Murtha has skillfully assembled a full-blown chart for younger jazz ensembles. The opening section trades the theme between trumpet and tenor sax, and eventually the entire ensemble gets into the act. Highly recommended! 10461374 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 Whirly Bird—Neal Hefti/arr. Peter Blair. You may have heard Basie's band play this great Neal Hefti swinger, but this version is very accessible for younger players at around 166 bpm. The features include a written alto sax solo, a great sax soli, and well-notated rhythm section parts.
