Berry. Here's a perfect touch of swing era nostalgia
with this signature tune from the Glenn Miller

n PerdidoJuan Tizol/arr. Dallas Burke. Here's
an updated treatment of the Ellington favorite that
features great ensemble writing. This straight-
ahead arrangement features an open solo section,

n Roll with the PunchesPaul Baker. Solidly
in the Basie/Nestico tradition, this swing chart
exemplifies the title's instructions...stay positive
and Roll with the Punches. Written solos are
provided for trombone, or optional trumpet, and
alto sax. Every section gets a chance to shine in the
full shout section, with the drummer adding some
tasty fills, which leads to the final ending "punch."
Trumpet range is to written G. Trombone range is
to written F. Highly recommended!

n 'S WonderfulGeorge Gershwin/arr. Paul Baker.
This chart is about swinging! Arranger Paul Baker
transforms this Gershwin classic into a great
medium swing chart. It has a Basie swing feel but
with a more contemporary harmonic flavor along
with sax section solis, written or ad lib solos for
alto 1 and trumpet 2 and a big shout chorus. It is a
wonderful chart! Optional expanded instrumentation.

Dowden. This very playable rendition of the early
blues classic opens with a sultry trumpet solo and
then breaks into a medium tempo shuffle with a
call and response section between the solo trumpet
and ensemble. Also featured are a nice sax section
soli, an open solo section on everybody's favorite
Bb blues changes, and a break strain. Nice chart
without being difficult!

4 The Second Time Around (Edited Version)
arr. Billy Byers. Much like the arrangements of
Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band
with some of their best music ever recorded. From
their album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays
the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement
of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin'
masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that
will stretch the group to play both very loud and
very soft, and is definitely an all-time favorite. In
this edited version, the high brass parts have been
eliminated, the trumpet and piano solos have been
written out, and the rhythm section parts are fully
notated. Every band should have this in their library!

Shiny StockingsFrank Foster/arr. Sammy
Nestico. Adapted from the version he penned for
The Count Basie Orchestra, Sammy Nestico brings

H
Sing, Sing, SingLouie Prima/arr. Victor Lopez.
Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and
love, made famous by Gene Krupa and the Benny
Goodman Orchestra, only arranged for young
players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that
can be opened up for as much excitement as the
crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor
solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty
ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will
also sound full with reduced instrumentation or
with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a
showstopper! Highly recommended!

n Six by SixDoug Beach. All the elements of
a great opener or closer are packed into this
medium easy blues chart...a strong melody, unison
ensemble lines, an open solo section, and a shout
chorus that starts soft and builds to a roar. Though
improvisation is encouraged, a supplemental sheet
provides written solos in all transpositions. The
rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued.

guitar player been waiting for a chance to be
in the spotlight? Then this cookin' blues shuffle
chart is just what you need! The guitar helper part

SolarMiles Davis/arr. Rick Stitzel. One of the
most enduring compositions from Miles Davis'
early career is this medium swing tune recorded
on the 1954 album Walkin'. Rick Stitzel uses
some nifty phrase extensions in the beginning,
then alternates the full ensemble with statements
by a small group in this terrific chart for younger
players. The solo space is for trumpet and tenor
sax with suggested solos and chord/scale sheets
in all keys included.

l Something to Smile AboutBob Turner. This
"two feel" original swing chart is really something
to smile about and sounds as if it could have
been a standard written in the 30's or 40's! The
chart is basically a conversation between alto sax,
trombone and piano with three distinct melodies all
happening at the same time. The piano solo breaks
as well as the solo section can be improvised or
played as written. A sax soli section after the solos
includes a trombone player with the sax section
adding to the quality of the sound.

4 South Street BluesJeff Jarvis. Good time
swingin' is the best way to describe this medium-
easy chart set at around 138 bpm. Whether
your ensemble has some experience or is in the
developmental stages, this chart is suitable for
all performance situations, particularly festivals.
All horn sections get to shine, including trumpet
and trombone section solis without rhythm, and
a sax section soli taking it to a discreet finale. All
instruments have interesting parts to play, the parts
are well articulated, the ranges are reasonable, and
the rhythm section parts are notated with chord
symbols provided. Due to the accessible blues
progression, everyone is encouraged to get into the
spotlight using the provided solo sheets. Extremely
nice, and highly recommended!

H Star Spangled Bannerarr. Paul Clark. Although
this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands,
this arrangement works so well it can appropriately
be included in any jazz concert. It's also invaluable
to have in the files for those "emergency" situations
where a jazz group is called upon to perform our
National Anthem. It includes just the right elements
to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and
reverence of the original. While it is harmonically
jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can serve
as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also
playable with reduced instrumentation. If your
jazz ensemble plays for basketball games, this is
perfect. A wise investment for all jazz programs!
Highly recommended!

Murtha has skillfully assembled a full-blown chart
for younger jazz ensembles. The opening section
trades the theme between trumpet and tenor sax,
and eventually the entire ensemble gets into the
act. Highly recommended!
