Starting with a strong introduction and a Neal Hefti inspired melody, this power-packed chart grooves from start to finish. Abundant articulations make for a very crisp, spirited performance that will get the attention of audiences and judges. Darmon Meader. Here's a tasty chart on this Gershwin classic from the Great American Songbook! As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on their Basie Big Band album, this easy swing excursion for proficient players has all the ingredients you'd expect from a classic Basie chart, tasteful piano fills, lots of solid ensemble work, and a big solo for trumpet (as written or ad lib). The rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. You have got to have this spectacular Alan Baylock chart on the Maynard Ferguson and Alan Downey classic! Alan's arrangement is reminiscent of Maynard's version, but in a lower key since the lead trumpet only goes to written D above the staff. The tempo is brisk at about 220 bpm, but it could be played effectively at a slightly slower tempo. Solo space is provided for all four trumpets for flexibility. As arranged by Quincy Jones for his album Birth of a Band, this Sonny Stitt tune is a brilliant, straight- ahead chart that swings like crazy, featuring Q's outstanding ensemble writing. It also features Zoot Sims' recorded solo, written out with changes above. Happy Faces would be a great opener and will be a favorite of bands and audiences for a long time to come. Beginning with the Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle chart features in-your-face ensemble writing at its finest. There is short, written-out solo space for trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from beginning to end! Never has a sad song sounded so happy! If you have a hot trombone player in your band, you've got to check out this chart! This thing smokes from beginning to end, and it just gets better and better as it unfolds. It's got the classic Gershwin sound, the incredibly skillful writing of Dave Wolpe, and plenty of space for your lead trombone player to strut his or her stuff! This big band standard made famous by Tommy Dorsey gets an updated treatment with a funky groove alternating with a swing feel at around 170 bpm. This is a clever and effective treatment of this familiar melody, with solos written for trombone 2 and tenor, and drum fills with band hits. You can buy any of these titles with confidence! Ahunk Ahunk—Thad Jones/arr. Mike Carubia. This blues composition recorded on the Consummation album in 1970 will give players a chance to experience performing in 5/4 meter. Lots of unison voicings give jazz bands a powerful sound in this moderately re-scored version of the original. It also features open solo sections on friendly B-flat chord changes and two exciting shout choruses for the band to wail on. Billy Byers. Much like the arrangements of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with some of their best music ever recorded. From Basie's album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that will stretch bands to play both very loud and very soft, and will certainly be a favorite of audiences. While much of this chart features the ensemble, there is improvised solo space for trumpet and a few written Basie-esque solos for piano.
