4 Count Me In (Pro Version)Billy Byers. Much
like Neal Hefti's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers original
exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its
finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout
section before returning to the quieter approach.
This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra
on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour. Set in
a medium-slow swing feel, there are improvised
solos for trumpet and piano. In this original version,
the arrangement is exactly as recorded by the
Basie band.

n Cruisin' for a Bluesin'Andy Weiner. If you have
the horses, let 'em run with this churnin', burnin'
swing monster from Maynard's big band album Big
Bop Nouveau. The chart really burns, but will sound
just as hot with the tempo turned down a notch
or two. Includes some smokin' optional choruses
featuring saxes alone without rhythm section.

n DoozyBenny Carter. At a bright swing, here is
the big-band version of one of Benny Carter's most
popular tunes. This arrangement was written for the
The American Jazz Orchestra in 1986 and features
a solo for trumpet as well as a lengthy shout section.
Edited from the original Carter manuscript, this new
publication swings hard and is one of Carter's most
enduring compositions. Highly recommended!

Duly NotedJeff Jarvis. While this swing
original for advancing groups is a great choice
for any concert, it's especially good for festival
performances. Starting with a strong introduction
and a Neal Hefti inspired melody, this power-packed
chart grooves from start to finish. Short soli sections
are included to showcase all three horn sections
and the rhythm section has notated parts that lend
solid support. Abundant articulations make for a very
crisp, spirited performance that will get the attention
of audiences and judges. Not just a head tune, it
features the whole band with great ensembles and
sectional solis! Highly recommended!

Darmon Meader. Here's a tasty chart on this
Gershwin classic from the Great American
Songbook! With a medium swing feel at about 120
bpm, it features optional flugelhorns to add to the
rich textures, a written solo provided for tenor sax,
and a lead trumpet range to written high C. It will be
a pleasure to play this chart!

l Fools Rush Inarr. Thad Jones. This slow
swing chart was written for the Count Basie band
and opens with the trombones stating the melody
for the first A section. This is followed by a tenor
saxophone solo for the second A with swinging
brass backgrounds. There's a great saxophone soli
that leads to a shout chorus and ending. With great
harmonies and swinging melodic lines, this slow
swinger at around 100 bpm, is as vital today as it
was in Basie's hey day!

n Freckle FaceSammy Nestico. As recorded
by the Count Basie Orchestra on their Basie
Big Band album, this easy swing excursion for
proficient players has all the ingredients you'd
expect from a classic Basie chart, tasteful piano
fills, lots of solid ensemble work, and a big solo
for trumpet (as written or ad lib). The rhythm
section parts are partially notated with chords
cued. The Basie band is always great, and this
chart is one of the reasons why!

n Give It OneFerguson & Downey/arr. Alan
Baylock. You have got to have this spectacular Alan
Baylock chart on the Maynard Ferguson and Alan
Downey classic! Alan's arrangement is reminiscent
of Maynard's version, but in a lower key since the
lead trumpet only goes to written D above the staff.
The tempo is brisk at about 220 bpm, but it could
be played effectively at a slightly slower tempo. Solo
space is provided for all four trumpets for flexibility.
Truly outstanding, and highly recommended!

arrangement is finally available! As recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time

your audiences to their feet. Beginning with the
Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle

trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply
swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from

Ahunk Ahunk—Thad Jones/arr. Mike Carubia.
This blues composition recorded on the Consummation album in 1970 will give players a chance
to experience performing in 5/4 meter. Lots of unison voicings give jazz bands a powerful sound
in this moderately re-scored version of the original. It also features open solo sections on friendly
B-flat chord changes and two exciting shout choruses for the band to wail on. Optional high and
low 1st trumpet parts and an optional flute part add to the usefulness of this very cool chart!

The Second Time Around (Pro Version)—arr. Billy Byers.
Much like the arrangements of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with some of
their best music ever recorded. From Basie's album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays the Hits
of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece.
This is a great dynamic chart that will stretch bands to play both very loud and very soft, and
will certainly be a favorite of audiences. While much of this chart features the ensemble, there
is improvised solo space for trumpet and a few written Basie-esque solos for piano. Every band
should have this in their library!
