l Old Man RiverJerome Kern/arr. Willie Maiden.
As arranged by the great Willie Maiden and
recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra,
this clever chart is set in three sections: ballad,
medium swing and fast swing. There's written
solo space for baritone saxohpone, bass (written),
tenor saxophone, trumpet, alto saxophone, and
lead trumpet (a la Maynard). While this chart
will certainly take some work to pull off, it will
absolutely be worth the effort! The band and its
audiences will love this great rendition of Old Man
River! 5-5-4-3

n The Phat PackGordon Goodwin. Slow, bluesy
and vampy! Here's the title chart as recorded on
Gordon Goodwin's CD The Phat Pack. Things to
enjoy: it's kind of greasy, it's full of twists and
turns, calls for brass plunger mutes, optional
bass clarinet for bari sax, and the lead trumpet
range goes up to written E with a few Gs.
There's solo space for all saxes, trumpet 4,
and trombone 1. Another winner from Gordon!
Highly recommended!

Henderson Big Band album won a Grammy Award
for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance.
The arrangements featured lengthy solos for
tenor saxophone and an open solo section so
that any number of soloists could be featured.
In addition, while there was no guitarist used
during the recording sessions, but a guitar
part has been included as Henderson had
done in his arrangements. These arrange-
ments will require significant time to prepare,
but they will be amazing for any competition
or festival! Ranges: Trumpet 1 to C#6; Trombone
1 to Bb4.

n Rhapsody in BlueGeorge Gershwin/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. This is a tour-de-force arrangement by
Gordon Goodwin of Gershwins's masterpiece. If you
can cut it, then play it because it will truly warrant
a standing ovation. The sax doubles call for piccolo
(alto 1), clarinet/flute (alto 2) and bass clarinet (bari).
The second alto part has the well-known clarinet
solo. This chart has it all...the thematic material,
swing, key changes, solo space for alto, tenor, bari,
trumpet and trombone and lead trumpet range to
written high F. The percussion part calls for mallets
and tympani. Overall, a grasp of both jazz and
classical concepts will make this chart stand apart
from anything else. As recorded by the Big Phat

As recorded by the Buddy Rich Big Band on the
album The New One, this great arrangement is
full of fire and energy. Set as an up-tempo shuffle,
it's a wonderful chart to feature lots of soloists
along with dynamic ensemble writing throughout.
There's solo space for alto saxophone, tenor
saxophone and trombone, allowing each to blow
as long as they would like. In addition, this tune
features a saxophone soli, a short trumpet section
soli (a la Dizzy), and climaxes with a great shout
chorus. The Rotten Kid will be an outstanding
opener or closer for any concert program!

n A Shade of JadeJoe Henderson. In 1992 Joe
Henderson and Don Sickler put together an all-star
band to record A Shade of Jade and other charts
that had been sitting around for many years. The
idea was that the band would perform a concert of
these arrangements at Lincoln Center and then later
that week go into the studio to record. The concert
was broadcast by NPR complete with interviews
with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson. A second
recording session was held four years later where
arrangements by Bob Belden, Slide Hampton and
Michael Philip Mossman were recorded. In 1998
the Joe Henderson Big Band album won a Grammy
Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance.
All of these arrangements feature lengthy solos
for a tenor saxophone soloist. Included are open
solo sections so that any number of soloists may
be featured. These arrangements will require
significant time to prepare, but they will be amazing
for any competition or festival! Ranges: Trumpet 1 to
D6; Trombone 1 to Bb4.

She's Leaving HomeLennon & McCartney/arr.
Richard Tuttobene. This Beatles classic is treated
to a creative and varied setting in this production
number from Richard Tuttobene. The lush chorale-
like opening leads to a jazz waltz setting of the
main theme featuring a flugelhorn soloist. The full
ensemble is then featured in a straight ahead swing
section and the slow chorale style from the opening
makes a brief, yet effective, return near the end.
A unique tour-de-force for mature ensembles!
Ideal festival chart!

n Sing, Sing, SingLouis Prima/arr. Gordon
Goodwin. A few twists and turns added to the
original Benny Goodman swing version make this
chart a definite crowd and band pleaser. Gordon
Goodwin's arrangement features a clarinet part
and an alternate alto 1 part in lieu of clarinet. Solo
changes are provided for all saxophone parts and
clarinet, and the lead trumpet range is to high
F-sharp. While not recorded by Goodwin's Big
Phat Band, it's a staple of the band's library and is
played often in live performances. It's a wonderful
rendition of this big band classic!

Jazz Piano Essentials!
An Approach to Comping:
The Essentials (A Guide to Jazz
Accompanying)—Jeb Patton.
This book
with two CDs focuses on how pianists play
(or comp) behind jazz soloists. It's a step-
by-step guide to basic comping of rhythms,
voicings, and progressions as played by the masters. Numerous transcriptions
from jazz masters (including Horace Silver, Barry Harris, Bud Powell, Tadd
Dameron and more) are used to dig deeply into how jazz pianists help make
the rhythm section swing and provide a background for soloists. More than 80
comping exercises help pianists secure the concepts while the two CDs contain
demonstrations and play-along tracks. A "must-have" for jazz pianists!

Playing for Singers (The Art of Accompaniment for the Jazz
Pianist)—Mike Greensill.
Playing for Singers explores, in depth, the art of
accompaniment for the jazz and cabaret pianist. It covers all the fundamentals
of playing for vocalists, as it applies to the performance of the "Great American
Songbook." Topics covered include: how to accompany singers as a solo
pianist, what changes when bass and drums are added, the art of out of tempo
accompaniment, and the accompanist as arranger, composer, copyist and
musical director. Also included are numerous musical examples demonstrating
the ideas presented and nuggets of wisdom from great accompanists. This
is a useful book for singers, as well as pianists, since an intimate relationship
between the two is essential.
