Composed by Dizzy Gillespie and Gil Fuller, here's Gordon Goodwin's chart as recorded by Arturo Sandoval and his big band on the CD, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You). This is a challenging swing chart that is very fast at around 202-232 bpm. The solo space is for all 5 saxes, trombones 1 and 2 and trumpet 4, with the lead trumpet range going to written high F-sharp with optional A-flats. There are nice sax solis and a trumpet section soli (or solo) that will be a challenge. There is a wonderful sax soli, followed by a trumpet section soli and a trombone section soli, the last two without the rhythm section. "Groove" is the operative word when rehearsing this shuffle chart, but there are many other features that make it a great addition to your library! As recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra on New Sounds of Maynard Ferguson, this Willie Maiden arrangement takes a great tune and putis it in an up-tempo swing setting. This chart has a bop-like melody performed as a duet by alto saxophone and trumpet at the beginning, then moves into the ensemble. There is solo space for alto saxophone followed by a roaring shout chorus taking it to the end. There are some high trumpet notes (a la Maynard), with optional lower notes included. As always, Maiden provides an incredible arrangement sure to be loved by all audiences! 10455892 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 48.00 4 What You Dealin' With?Wycliffe Gordon. This is the show closer that will bring down the house! The main groove is a funky boogaloo at about 103 bpm, plus a band chant, a swing section, and a gospel feel. Commissioned by the New Trier High School Jazz Ensemble I, this is a bluesy swing chart that keeps on giving. Other features include a meaty sax solo and a powerful shout chorus that takes it through the roof! In 1992 Joe Henderson and Don Sickler put together an all-star band to record Without a Song and other charts that had been sitting around for many years. The idea was that the band would perform a concert of these arrangements at Lincoln Center and then later that week go into the studio to record. The concert was broadcast by NPR complete with interviews with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson. A second recording session was held four years later where arrangements by Bob Belden, Slide Hampton and Michael Philip Mossman were recorded. In 1998 the Joe Henderson Big Band album won a Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance. All of these arrangements feature lengthy solos for a tenor saxophone soloist. Included are open solo sections so that any number of soloists may be featured. These arrangements will require significant time to prepare, but they will be amazing for any competition or festival! Yes... and this adaptation of O Tannenbaum is quite an adventure! Offering a chorale, some Basie style and fast and furious Goodwin bebop, this is not your ordinary holiday jazz chart. There's solo space for alto and tenor sax, trumpet and trombone. The optional doubles are flute for 2nd alto sax, lead alto has either a standard alto part or an optional part for alto with a soprano double. Glenn Miller's band made this a huge World War II hit song and here it is scored for young players. This chart has no individual solos, very modest brass ranges and plenty of ensemble sound. Made famous by The Count Basie Orchestra, here is a great-sounding yet playable version of this standard for developing bands. It will even sound full and complete with only 4 saxes, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and rhythm! Also included are optional parts for flute, 2 clarinets, horn in F and tuba. Composed and recorded by Stan Kenton in the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature and a true classic from the big-band era. Paul Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this for younger players while maintaining the flavor and energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off followed by the iconic trombone solo in the medium Latin section. The exciting double time swing section features the entire ensemble, then the maestoso theme returns to close things out. Impressive! 10374166 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . This swinger features tenor sax 1 and muted trumpet 2 and is arranged by one of the best, Dave Wolpe. Featured are excellent written-out solos for both horns, a superb shout chorus, and a lead trumpet range hitting a written high B above the staff. ME 45.00 4 Blues in Hoss FlatFoster & Basie/arr. Rick Stitzel. Here's a great way to introduce the music of Count Basie to your young players. Carefully scored for young groups, this medium swing chart composed by Frank Foster and Count Basie trades the melody between the trumpets and saxes, includes a solo or soli for trumpet, and a brief shout chorus using tutti rhythms for the entire ensemble. Originally a hit back in 1941 for the Andrews Sisters, this classic has stood the test of time and is hard to beat for its entertainment value. This updated version has all the excitement of the original and the ranges are moderate for the trumpets. There are solos for trumpet and baritone sax in this outstanding chart that will appeal to your audiences and ensemble. Get out the saddle oxfords, bobby socks and pleated skirts for this one! Highly recommended! 2481643 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . M 50.00 n Boogie Woogie Bugle Boyarr. Michael Sweeney. This chart is way up on the "fun meter!" Mike's playable arrangement doesn't sacrifice any of that classic swing era sound and style. The trumpet section is the primary featured section, however the saxes also get a crack at the melody and the trombones will really enjoy the glissandi in the shout chorus. Perhaps the most well known version of this flag-waver was recorded by "The King of Swing," Benny Goodman. This very easy arrangement from Robert Woods works well at a variety of tempos and makes an ideal opener or closer for your young jazz groups. The solos are provided or can be improvised by alto and tenor saxes, trumpet and trombone. This '40's classic can be played with as few as 3 saxes, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone and rhythm section. Here is a new and creative new take on this Duke Ellington favorite set in a New Orleans street beat style. The rest of the ensemble enters with a counterline before the full ensemble launches the solo section which is designed to feature any number of soloists. The arrangement, with its straight- ahead, driving swing, and tons of great background figures is yet another amazing example of Holman's extraordinary arranging skills. There's solo space for tenor saxophone and, of course, trumpet. There is no real need for any extra high trumpet playing here. Here's a distinctive arrangement for beginning jazz groups on one of Duke Ellington's most recognizable tunes. It combines the styles of Latin and big band swing and is a marvelous introduction to the Duke for young jazzers.
