H Don't Get Around Much AnymoreDuke
Ellington/arr. Michael Sweeney. What better way
to introduce the music of Duke Ellington to your
young jazzers than with this wonderfully scored
arrangement by Michael Sweeney! Even at this
easy level, this chart really swings and will sound
great with limited rehearsal time. Your pianist gets a
rare chance to shine as he or she is featured on the
melody while the ensemble answers. Later, every
section gets to play the melody and there's a written
or ad lib solo for any saxophone. The final section
starts softly with saxes alone, then builds as various
layers are added. This bluesy, swinging chart is
playable with as few as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1
trombone, piano and drums, and all solos have
written parts provided. This belongs in every young
jazz curriculum! Highly recommended!

a nice chorus for a written or improvised alto sax solo
and some very cool trumpet section solis.

n I Can't Stop Loving Youarr. Quincy Jones.
Every jazz fan knows it, loves it and has wished it
was in print! And now, this quintessential big-band
arrangement is finally available! As recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time
by Basie: Hits of the 50s & 60s, Quincy Jones'
arrangement of I Can't Stop Loving You will bring
your audiences to their feet. Beginning with the
Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle
chart features in-your-face ensemble writing at its

trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply
swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from

I'm Getting Sentimental Over YouGeorge
Bassman/arr. Rick Hirsch. Here's a wonderful
update of Tommy Dorsey's classic theme song. It's
totally playable by high school jazz bands, yet it also
sounds great with college and professional groups.
It's written as a trombone feature throughout (with
optional solo parts included for B-flat and E-flat
instruments), although super-high Dorsey-esque
chops are not required. The solo is mostly written
with a section of improvising around the melody
and ad lib fills at the end. Alternate solo parts for
trumpet and saxophone are included, as well as
optional parts for Clarinet, Flute, Vibes, and French
Horn (doubling the Trombone 1 part). The bass and
piano parts are fully notated. An outstanding ballad
feature for any program!

Billy Byers for
the Basie Band!
These exceptional
Billy Byers charts
were featured on
some great Basie
albums and are now available for the first time in easier edited
versions or the pro versions as recorded by the Basie band.
Count Me In (Edited Version)—Billy Byers. Much like Basie's Li'l Darlin',
this Billy Byers compostion exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its
finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to
the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the
album Count Basie's Finest Hour. Set in a medium-slow swing feel, there are
solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost
exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts
are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been somewhat simplified.

In the Wee Small Hours (Edited Version)—arr. Billy Byers.
As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Frankly Basie: Count
Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, this arrangement by Billy Byers is a
fantastic medium-slow swing chart. It's classic Basie with a soft, swinging
melody, room for solos, and an "in-your-face" shout section which then returns
to the quiet melody with a gentle ending. In this edited version, the solos are
written out for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano, the high brass parts have
been modified, and the rhythm section parts are fully notated. Big band charts
don't get any better than this!

Much like the arrangements of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band
with some of their best music ever recorded. From their album Frankly Speaking:
Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second
Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that
will stretch the group to play both very loud and very soft, and is definitely an all-
time favorite. In this edited version, the high brass parts have been eliminated, the
trumpet and piano solos have been written out, and the rhythm section parts are
fully notated. Every band should have this in their library!
