NardisMiles Davis/arr. Paul Murtha. The
definitive recording of this jazz classic is by Bill
Evans, with other notable recordings by Cannonball
Adderley and Joe Henderson. Paul Murtha's
arrangement for developing groups features a Latin
style on the head then switches to swing on the
bridge. This really nice chart also includes very
effective writing for all sections of the band as well
as written or improvised solo space for alto sax.
Highly recommended!

n NutvilleHorace Silver/arr. Bryan Kidd. Horace
Silver's contemporary jazz classic is now available
for intermediate-level jazz ensembles in this
arrangement of the timeless tune made famous
by the Buddy Rich Band. The Latin/mambo style
is exciting and there are written or improvised solos
for any player. Written solos and chord changes
are provided for all members of the ensemble,
you can "open it up" as much as you like. Melodic
dissonance never sounded so hip and mellow as in
this great chart!

On Green Dolphin StreetBronislau Kaper/arr.
Frank Mantooth. A funky bass line leads into this
terrific arrangement of the famous standard, which
shifts between Latin and swing in a delightfully
funky way! This chart takes the tune where it has
never gone before, and it really likes going there!
Faithful to the original yet creative and fresh, it's a
great way to feature your ensemble, with written-
out or ad lib solo space for trumpet, tenor and
trombone. Highly recommended!

n One Note SambaAntonio Carlos Jobim/arr.
Paul Murtha. When it comes to Latin compositions,
it just doesn't get any better than the music of
Antonio Carlos Jobim. This classic tune is nicely
adapted for intermediate players featuring the
brass on the "one note" melody and the saxes on
the "more than one note" bridge. The easy flowing
groove and solid ensemble writing help ensure a
great sounding arrangement!
10016130 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
n Puerto del SolCarl Strommen. Veteran
composer Carl Strommen has created a very
playable, medium Latin chart that grooves along
at about 144 bpm. With a strong introduction and
a flowing unison melody, this nice original also
features a solo section with optional suggested solos
included or improvised as desired. The full ensemble
joins in before the first solo which enters and exits
with a highly effective and short unison montuno for
the rhythm section. The pleasant melody, written
solos, easy ranges and even eighth note feel
throughout make this a winner with little rehearsal
time. Written ranges: Trumpet 1 to A; Trombone to
F; Alto Sax to C#. An optional flute part is included.
This is a great Latin chart for mid level bands!

H
Running of the BullsDoug Beach & George
Shutack. This unique original is an ideal change-
of-pace tune for your next festival or concert
program. For developing ensembles, it opens with
a mysterious, Spanish style rubato introduction with
solo trumpet and rhythm section, then breaks into
an all-out, hot Latin/Spanish style that doesn't let
up. Crisp ensemble work and written or improvised
solos lead to a percussion break before the head
returns. Pure excitement!

l SkylinerCharlie Barnet/arr. Mark Taylor. At the
peak of the big band era, saxophonist, composer
and band leader Charlie Barnet recorded his
famous version of Cherokee followed shortly by
this second big hit. Treated here in a samba style,
Skyliner features the saxes playing the smooth
melody accompanied by a unison brass counterline.
There is solo space for tenor sax and trumpet,
followed by a sax soli and shout chorus for the full
ensemble. Suggested solos and chord/scale sheets
in all keys are included.

l SOSGeorge Shutack. A solid rhythmic fanfare
sets the mood for this burning samba. As the title
suggests, the rhythmic pattern throughout mirrors
the Morse code distress signal of 3 shorts, 3 longs
and 3 shorts. An infectious melody, strong rhythmic
groove, solid full ensemble work, and an open solo
section, written or improvised, combine to create a
very exciting piece of music for any program!

n Spring Ain't HerePat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow.
Bob Curnow continues to add to his Pat Metheny
Big Band Series with this wonderful light, laid-back,
Latin/rock chart. It's easy to play, with limited ranges
in the brass and a level of writing attractive even to a
younger group. Beginning with the drums setting the
groove in the intro, it transitions to the brass playing
the melody with sax section punches, then a short
sax soli, followed by full ensemble and a longer sax
soli. The full ensemble closes it out. There is solo
space for alto saxophone and trumpet/flugelhorn.
Highly recommended!

One of the all-time best known Latin/jazz classics
is this lively tune by Sonny Rollins! Mark Taylor
has done a great job of making it playable by
younger groups while maintaining the style of the
original. Small group playing is alternated with
the full band and a flexible solo section allows any
number of soloists.

H Afro BlueMongo Santamaria/arr. Michael
Mossman. Made famous by John Coltrane, but
treated here in a more traditional Afro-Latin style,
this is something a little different for jazz ensemble.
As with all Mossman charts, the rhythm section is
meticulously notated to ensure the correct style.
The 3/4 pattern throughout draws heavily on
African influences and the melody is masterfully
passed from section to section. A single pentatonic
scale works for the solo section, making this a
wonderful vehicle for involving many soloists.

Afro Blue (Little Big Band)Mongo Santamaria/
arr. Michael Mossman. Even though this is scored

an Afro-Cuban 6/8 groove, this marvelous chart
includes solos for tenor or trumpet. Instrumentation:
3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, rhythm section
with optional additional parts for alto sax, tenor sax
and trombone.

to F; Alto Sax to B.
