Christmas & Holiday / Jazz Ensemble Warm-Ups
4 Three Guys (We Three Kings)arr. Bob
Turner. Three Guys is a jazz/rock/funk take on We
Three Kings and is taken directly from the highly
successful flexible instrumentation small group
chart with the same title. The guitar fills and solo
are written and can be played as is or improvised.
Chord symbols are written into the solo section so
any player can take a ride. A great chart for any
holiday or winter concert!

n Trombones Under the TreePaul Clark. Three
carols that everyone will know are included in this
easy to prepare medley of Joy to the World, The First
Noel and Jingle Bells that features the trombone
section! No matter how many trombones you have,
it works great with a featured trombone quartet, trio,
duet...or even solo trombone! It's an effective and
fun arrangement that brings your trombones out
front to add variety and cheer at holiday and winter
concerts. Everyone will be talking about it on their
way home! Very highly recommended!

n The Twelve Days of Christmasarr. Paul
Clark. Everybody in the band gets their own special
"day" in this creative holiday rock arrangement of
the familiar tune. The melody gets traded off from
section to section in a fairly predictable way until
it's the piano players turn. Then things change
abruptly and some funky fun begins. This leads to
an open solo section over only two chords, and the
background parts sound so good you could even
omit the solos if desired. A few bars of piano sets up
the melody again, this time in a canon, which leads
to a big ending. At least 12 days of creativity in one
fun and easy to prepare chart! Highly recommended!

n Two Front TeethDon Gardner/arr. Paul Baker.
You, your band and their audiences will enjoy this
clever chart on this familiar holiday novelty tune.
After the full ensemble rubato introduction, the
medium tempo samba kicks in with altos and
trumpets, then the melody is bounced around to
all sections. After a Montuna interlude, there are
2nd trumpet written solos with only two chords to
keep it accessible for developing players, a sax
soli, a written 2nd trombone solo, then a big shout
chorus and out to the fun finish. It's also playable
with optional expanded instrumentation. Something
different...a clever samba based on this holiday
standard. Highly recommended!

section over an easy two-chord vamp if desired.
An especially nice effect is an eight-bar a cappella
chorale section before the original style returns and
takes it on home to the finale. This one will be a big
hit on your holiday concert!

n Developing the Language of JazzJonathan
Holford & Mike Carubia. Developing the Language
of Jazz is a unique and comprehensive warm-up
method and study that will have your jazz ensemble
reading and playing stylistically more correct after
a few 5 to 8 minute warm-up sessions. These
simple, concise, and straight forward studies not
only help students with the conceptual and stylistic
difficulties in the jazz style, but will also help both
jazz savvy and novice jazz educators convey these
concepts to their students. This insightful set of
exercises primarily uses the instructional technique
of call (where the exercises are demonstrated by
the teacher or from mp3 audio examples) and
response (when students play back the example).
The mp3 audio files are available as downloads
from the publisher's website for each instrument.
Included are both unison and harmonized
exercises. Those teachers who have been active
in the jazz idiom will relish the fact that they
have a complete curriculum of material to work
with covering the six aspects of the language of
jazz: Rhythm, Articulation, Dynamics, Balance,
Phrasing and Beginning Improvisation. Developing
the Language of Jazz is sold as a complete
set with parts included for standard jazz band
instrumentation plus a teacher's part.
