Featuring a melody line that bounces from part to part within the ensemble, this medium tempo, bebop "blues with a bridge" chart keeps the conductor on his toes "herding the cats" in the band. Lots of open solo space with changes provided allows for numerous soloists and an a cappella chorus featuring the horn section. A flag-waving shout chorus leads to a Basie piano ending. The trumpet range is to written high C and the trombone range is to G. At about 188 bpm, this great original is scored for 5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones plus bass trombone, and four rhythm. Mark Taylor has crafted a unique version, in the six- horn format, of this familiar Beatles classic. After a gentle ballad-like intro, the style shifts to jazz waltz featuring a tenor sax soloist. Along the way there are sophisticated rhythmic stylings and a terrific shout chorus for the entire ensemble. Your students and audiences will love this burning swing tune made famous by Royal Crown Revue. The groove is set up with a drum solo laying down a Sing, Sing, Sing Krupa feel before the band enters. A trumpet with plunger solo leads into a sax soli section. Next, the trumpet section is featured on a soli section before a half-time feel gives the brass a chance to shine. Returning to the original groove, a written solo for tenor sax heightens the excitement. Finally, there's an open drum solo before the band enters and takes it on home. Originally recorded by the New Orleans funk band, The Meters, Hey Pocky Way is fashioned here by Eric Richards in the style of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It's a great change-of-pace chart, and a fun style to play in the little big band format. Scored for 6 horns (3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone) plus rhythm section with optional parts included for alto sax, tenor sax and trombone. 10374162 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00 n How High the MoonMorgan Lewis/arr. Dave Wolpe. Now this is classy! Dave Wolpe puts the trombones out front in this solid swinger, and boy do they sound great carrying the tune! This sits comfortably for bands at the medium level, and three of your bone players get a chance to solo, with suggested solos offered. Using a wide variety of scoring styles, this great-sounding arrangement takes full advantage of the six-horn format. There's solo space for tenor and trumpet along with nicely scored and swinging full ensemble passages. Suggested solos and scale/chord sheets are provided. A terrific rendition of this classic tune! Instrumentation: 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone plus rhythm section. Optional additional parts included for alto, tenor & trombone. You just can't get much better than a Dave Wolpe arranged swing chart, and this is no exception — in fact, it's one of his best. The features include a great intro; then beginning with the trombone section, the melody bounces between sections; a written (or ad lib) alto solo; an excellent shout chorus; and the lead trumpet top note is a written B. You can't go wrong with this great chart on a wonderful Cole Porter standard! Quincy Jones wrote some incredible arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in San Francisco features great interplay between the ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm, and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are very moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of bands. With great dynamics, sax solis, and a sweet shout chorus, this chart swings all by itself, and you'll really like the voicings! Set in a medium swing style at around 114 bpm, written solos are provided for alto, trombone 1, and piano. Optional wind and vibes parts are included for expanded instrumentations. A fine chart for concert, contest or festival! Highly recommended! 10452140 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 50.00 I Mean YouMonk & Hawkins/arr. Mike Tomaro. Written by Thelonious Monk and Coleman Hawkins, this chart features a freewheeling, New Orleans-style street beat alternating with straight- ahead swing. Mike Tomaro's setting is unique and creative on this Monk classic. Trumpet and tenor share the melody, and solo space is included for trombone and piano with suggested solos included. Based on a 16-bar blues variation, it features a down 'n dirty loose shuffle feel, active ensemble passages and an open solo section over 16-bar blues changes. An effective highlight is a horns only section without the rhythm section after the solos. Greg Yasinitsky has made this great jazz classic into an up-tempo, flag-wavin' swinger. Mike Tomaro. Recorded by Stevie Wonder in 1976 on his acclaimed album Songs in the Key of Life, this beautiful song is a good example of combining elements of jazz with pop. The tempo is not taxing with the quarter equaling 120; however, paying careful attention to dynamics will be especially important. This great Oliver Nelson tune from the early '60s was originally recorded by a small group, but here it's been arranged for big band in a very hip way! Set in an easy swing shuffle feel, this chart has a bluesy feel while providing a nice, unexpected variation to the standard blues changes. There's improvised solo space for alto saxophone, trombone and piano. In this professional version, Oliver Nelson's solo has been transcribed and set as a trumpet soli. Very cool and fun to play! You'll really enjoy J & B! 10455864 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 57.00 n Jazz BugOliver Nelson/arr.Bob Curnow. This is a great Oliver Nelson chart that swings like crazy! It begins in 3/4 and then goes to 4/4 and has a wonderful feel and flow as it moves through the different sections. This chart has very limited brass ranges with some optional octave writing in the trumpet 1 part. There is solo space for alto saxophone, trumpet, piano and drums. This big band arrangement was adapted from the original small group version as recorded on Oliver Nelson Plays Michelle. If you know the music of the brilliant composer Billy Strayhorn, you will love this chart! It's an outstanding arrangement with a clever melody that seriously swings all the way. Mark Taylor. Notably recorded by Clifford Brown and composed by legendary jazz pianist Duke Jordan, Mark Taylor's arrangement features a medium swing style and a brief duet for tenor sax and trumpet at the top. Then the saxes take over and do most of the heavy lifting. Solo space is provided for tenor and trumpet, with ample solid hits for the full ensemble. Beautifully written in a slow swing style, this impressive swing ballad is an excellent showcase for your lead trombone player. Rob keeps the ranges modest throughout, yet achieves a most sophisticated sound by way of a well-crafted melody, paired with a distinctive set of chord changes and well-written ensembles. The solo is accessible and melodic, plus there is terrific ensemble writing for the full ensemble. The rhythm section parts are fully notated along with chord changes to ensure success.
