There's an open solo section for soloists of choice that is written or improvised. Much like the arrangements of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with some of their best music ever recorded. From their album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that will stretch the group to play both very loud and very soft, and is definitely an all-time favorite. In this edited version, the high brass parts have been eliminated, the trumpet and piano solos have been written out, and the rhythm section parts are fully notated. Every now and then it comes along, a ballad so hauntingly beautiful that it may just be the highlight of your concert! This is one such gem. Dave Wolpe. Here is a natural pairing of ballad style with an exceptional standard as a tenor saxophone feature. Beautifully arranged, this chart features lush harmonies, a double-time swing section, and a nice sax section soli with tenor lead. The tenor solo is completely notated and does not require improvisation, although it could be added. The lead trumpet range is to B above the staff, and optional parts are included for expanded instrumentations.
