Ballads medium-advanced & advanced / Jazz Ensemble with Vocal Solo
n EverlastingGordon Goodwin. As recorded by
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band on the CD That's
How We Roll, but minus the woodwind doubles,
saxes only. Arranged for flexibility, it's a beautiful
solo feature for C instruments, alto sax, tenor sax,
trumpet or trombone with all the solo parts included.
The tempo is easy at 138 bpm and the style is a
mellow straight-eighth groove. The lead trumpet
range goes only to written F-sharp on the top line
and flugelhorns are preferred for the trumpet section
if possible. Everlasting is very accessible as a solo
feature and has a gorgeous melody!

n Georgia on My MindHoagy Carmichael/
arr. Sammy Nestico. From Ray Charles to Doc
Severinson, everyone has a different approach to
this bluesy ballad, but nobody does it like Sammy
Nestico! When he adds his masterful touch, the
result is a chart that is destined to be a classic.
While it's an alto sax feature, this is a chart that
every member of the band will love for it's exquisite
harmonic approach and unmistakable melodic lines.

H GraceJones & Lubbock/arr. Quincy Jones &
Sammy Nestico. From the acclaimed CD Basie &
Beyond comes this emotional ballad for tenor or
soprano sax that will touch the hearts of performers
and audiences alike. Lush chords and a tender
piano introduction set the mood, and the rest is
simply sensational. Nice!

Dee Barton. The famous version as performed by
the Stan Kenton Band!

l Lover Manarr. Bill Holman. This is a beautiful
arrangement by Bill Holman that features alto
saxophone throughout. Set as a straight-eighth
ballad, this chart was originally written for Charlie
Parker to perform with the Stan Kenton Orchestra,
but it was enentually recorded with Lee Konitz. The
ensemble writing is very playable with no range
concerns in the brass. If you want to feature an
outstanding alto sax student or a guest artist (the
solo is mostly chord symbols), this is an easy
tune to put together with your band and will be a
spectacular addition to any concert program.

H My Funny ValentineRichard Rodgers/arr. Bill
Holman. As originally recorded by the great Charlie
Mariano with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, this is
a must-have ballad feature for alto saxophone.
Let your alto player (or trumpet...parts provided
for either) shine on this popular standard!
Instrumentation: 5-5-5-4.

l The Party's OverJule Styne/arr. Willie Maiden.
This is a gorgeous ballad arranged by Willie Maiden
for the great Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. There is
wonderful ensemble writing that is playable by most
bands, and it also features a short improvised solo
for tenor saxophone. With a strong, Maynard-like
player for this written-out lead trumpet feature, your
band will have a truly magnificent, knock-out ballad
to add to any concert program!

4 The PassageGordon Goodwin. As recorded by
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, this is a luscious
alto sax ballad feature at 74 bpm. It's a lyrical
vehicle with rich harmony and textures, soaring
ensemble figures, and a soli with saxes (alto 2
optional flute), trumpet 2, guitar, and piano. An
outstanding chart!

H
Round MidnightMonk & Williams/arr. Dave
Wolpe. Dave Wolpe sets this timeless and beautiful
Cootie Williams and Thelonious Monk classic as
a flugelhorn feature. The band and soloist get to
stretch out some in a double time interlude before
returning to the lyrical ballad style. This chart is
everything you would want it to be. Great tune,
great chart! Highly recommended!

l Ruby, My DearThelonious Monk/arr. John
Fedchock. John Fedchock's chart on this Monk
classic is an all-out trombone solo feature, though
it also showcases the band's restraint and ability
to shift dynamically between piano and fortissimo.
The sophisticated harmonies and sensitive voicings
make this work a colorful challenge for the jazz
ensemble's sense of blend and balance. Great
chart, John!

H SamanthaSammy Nestico. Originally written
for and played by Bud Shank, this showpiece
for alto sax features a wide dynamic range and
calls for a soft, smooth approach to background
figures. Although written solo lines are provided
throughout, the main solo chorus includes chord
changes for players with improvisation chops.
The chart closes out with a solo cadenza over a
sustained ensemble chord.

4 The Second Time Around (Pro Version)arr.
Billy Byers. Much like the arrangements of Quincy
Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with
some of their best music ever recorded. From
Basie's album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie
Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement
of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin'
masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that
will stretch bands to play both very loud and very
soft, and will certainly be a favorite of audiences.
While much of this chart features the ensemble,
there is improvised solo space for trumpet and a
few written Basie-esque solos for piano. Every band
should have this in their library!
10455886 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . MA 52.00
n Sophisticated LadyDuke Ellington/arr. Mike
Crotty. Arranged especially for the USAF Airmen
of Note, this alto sax ballad feature is outstanding
in every respect. The introduction features
the trombones, followed by the alto solo with
piano, development, more alto solo space, some
double time sections, then back to the ballad
tempo with the solo, and a big ensemble ending.
The lead trumpet range is to written high E-flat
and there is an optional 5th trumpet part. More
than a ballad solo feature, this is a substantial
jazz chart! Highly recommended!

H Spring Can Really Hang You up the Most
Tommy Wolf/arr. Kris Berg. Here's an outstanding
Kenton-style ballad that showcases the lead
trombone and the trombone section. The chart
builds during a 12/8 section that makes it an
even stronger choice as an excellent ballad
feature. There are no improvised solos and lead
trumpet range is to written C above the staff with
an optional D sharp. This one is a wonderful jazz
ballad with a twist!

TruthBob Mintzer. If you need a great ballad to
feature your tenor saxophonist, this Bob Mintzer
original is just what you're looking for. Recorded
first in 1983 and again in 1986, this beautiful music
features harmonies and scoring techniques that
give Mintzer's music a fresh, modern sound.

n At LastHarry Warren/arr. Dave Wolpe. At Last
is the ever-popular, bluesy, vocal ballad feature as
arranged by Dave Wolpe. The chart is arranged in
two keys to suit the needs of all vocalists. Substitute
instrumental solos are included, with a written tenor
sax solo in the low female key and a written alto sax
solo in the high male key. The vocal ranges are: low
female in the key of G, high male in the key of B-flat.

n Avalonarr. Bill Holman. This roaring and
challenging Bill Holman chart begins with the vocal
soloist solely accompanied by bass. Halfway through
the first chorus drums enter, and then at the end of
the chorus the whole band enters. This arrangement
features a great ensemble chorus and nice
backgrounds behind the vocal. Due to the length
of the original arrangement (just over two minutes
in duration), a solo section for tenor saxophone has
been added. Ranges: Trumpet 1 to E6; Trombone
1 to Bb4; Vocal Key: Bb modulating to C.
