Ever since the widespread popularity of the Jeff Jarvis funk original Critical Mass, requests for a sequel have been pouring in. At last, Jeff has composed and arranged Honk, with all the characteristics that made its predecessor such a hit with jazz ensembles, only at a slightly more accessible level. Like Critical Mass, Honk begins with a cool sax section introduction, clearly placing your baritone saxophonist in the limelight, but without excessive technical demands. Everyone has interesting and challenging parts to play throughout and the modulation near the end gives it an extra, added lift. The solos are open and the backgrounds can be varied by instrumentation. This one is hot from beginning to end! The opening features the brass with sax section fills. The middle section goes into a double-time swing and includes a solo for tenor sax, a soli for the saxes, and a drum break. You can buy any of these titles with confidence! Blues for Miles—Freddie Hubbard/arr. Mike Carubia. Here's a great chart on Freddie Hubbard's Blues for Miles that really cooks! Freddie describes this tune as "hip hop funk" on the original CD also entitled Blues for Miles. This solid arrangement begins with the trumpets introducing the very funky unison melody followed by a cool stop-time chorus for the sax section. Solos follow for the soloists of choice on slightly altered B-flat blues changes and then an exciting rock-flavored shout chorus takes it back to the head. Including an optional flute part, this is an outstanding choice for any performance opportunity! There's lots of funky fun in this cool chart that starts out featuring a combo of alto sax, bari sax, trumpet, guitar and trombone before the whole ensemble gets in on the action.
