folksong a snap to learn! The parts for African
drums, rattles, shakers, gourds, and bells give it
an authentic African sound, and it's so much fun

n Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)—arr. Kevin A.
Memley. This is a real find for a cappella voices!
Phrases of "vocal bagpipes," in which the
voices imitate the sound of bagpipes, create an
amazing effect as they set the proper mood for
one of the most beautiful settings of Danny Boy
you will ever hear. Highly recommended!

4 The Dawn's Awake!—Laura Farnell. Just as
The Dawn's Awake!, a poem by early twentieth-
century poet Otto Bohanan, uses personification
and vivid imagery to describe the beauty of the
sunrise, Laura Farnell's music conveys the
hope of looking forward to a brighter future.
Developing men's choirs will realize their full
potential when they sing this serious work,
which is a refreshing change of pace from the
abundance of lighter fare in the repertoire. "The
dawn of a thousand dreams and thrills, and
music sings and rings in the hills."

De Profundis—Russell Robinson. Premiered
at Lincoln Center, this exciting mixed-meter
festival piece features both Latin and English
versions of Psalm 130. Somewhat reminiscent
of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," it is truly a
striking original work in its own right. "Out of the
depths I have cried to thee, O Lord."

4 Dies Irae (Day of Wrath)—D. Farrell Smith.
Employing the text from the Requiem Mass, this
dramatic, exciting, rhythmic setting propels the
angular melodies, many of which are unison,
forward. The contrasting, lyric B section allows
for a brief respite and will challenge the singers
to explore color in tone and expression. This is
sure to be a compelling piece for middle school
and young high school choirs.

4
Dona Nobis Pacem—Richard A. Williamson.
This familiar Latin text is set for women or three-
part treble voices and allows singers to interpret
the music by the rise and fall of the musical
lines, the rubato style, expressive dissonance,
and dynamic opportunities. Beautiful in
performance, it is also a wonderful teaching
piece for a variety of ages.

4 Doraji—arr. David Teas. Doraji, a popular
Korean folksong, is also a beautiful wildflower
that originated in Asia. This singable arrangement
is the ideal choice for a multicultural feature,
with phonetic subtext and plenty of repetition to
make it easy to learn. The original tune, based
on the pentatonic scale, is presented in the first
verse, then the second verse is sung to a new
tune which is an inversion of the original. The
overall effect - the feeling of quiet contentment
it conveys - is stunning!

Ht Earth Song—Frank Ticheli. A cry for peace in
a world torn by war, this poignant a cappella
setting of an original text is filled with striking
dynamic contrasts. "Sing, Be, Live, See...
This dark stormy hour, the wind, it stirs. The
scorched earth cries out in vain... But music
and singing have been my refuge, and music
and singing shall be my light..."

l Eatnemen Vuelie (Fairest Lord Jesus)—
Frode Fjellheim. The opening musical number
from the Disney animated feature "Frozen,"
this song is inspired by indigenous Saami and
Norwegian culture, a combination of Saami
yoiking and the Danish Christmas hymn Dejlig er
jorden, or Fairest Lord Jesus, by B.S. Ingemann.
Yoik is a very old vocal tradition among the
Saami people of Scandinavia and Russia,
characterized by short melodic phrases that
repeat again and again, with small variations.
With English, German and Norwegian versions
of the text, synthesizer, percussion and optional
male yoik.

4 Elijah Rock—arr. Rollo Dilworth. Building on
the heritage of the great arrangements of Jester
Hairston and Moses Hogan, Rollo Dilworth
creates his own unique approach to the
traditional spiritual in this setting for treble voices
and piano. Through layering of motivic material
and percussive effects in the lyrics, elements
of jazz, blues and gospel music combine to
great success in portraying Elijah's dramatic
ascension into heaven. Highly recommended!

Et in Terra Pax—Mary Lynn Lightfoot. In this
expressive setting of a traditional Latin text,
sweeping melodic lines and rich harmonies
lead to an ending of quiet splendor. Mary Lynn
composes some of the best music available for
school choirs, and this is a prime example of her
work. Highly recommended!
