4 Amazing Grace—Traditional/arr. Sean
O'Loughlin. Amazing Grace may well be the

never sounded better than in this absolutely
gorgeous setting. Flowing lines along with some
impressive harmonic twists lift up this tune. It's
musically sensitive and simply beautiful!

Blackberry Blossom—Gary Gackstatter.
Feature your top player on this famous American
tune! The first time through, the soloist takes
the lead accompanied by some pizzicato and
the occasional foot stomp. The second time
through, first violins play most of the tune along
with the soloist. The third and final time through
the soloist gets some nice variations on the
tune. And, oh yes, the faster the better!

Blue Fire Fiddler—Soon Hee Newbold.
Energetic, exciting and fun, are the words
that best describe this kickin' fiddle tune.
This fast and furious fiddling piece sounds
much harder than it really is. Riffs, finger
patterns and bowings are very idiomatic
and lend themselves to fast playing. This is
sure to be the hit of the concert!

Dotonbori Dash—Alan Lee Silva. This
work illustrates an adventurous chase
through the Dotonbori Market, a lively and
colorful marketplace in Osaka, Japan. As
the caper traverses in and out of doorways
and through packed crowds, each section
of the orchestra gets a prime opportunity to
display their skills on either long, cascading
melodies or contemporary bassline parts.
The col legno and slapping effects enhance
the rhythms and texture. A high energy piece
that builds to a rousing conclusion!

Fantasia on a Theme from Thailand—
Richard Meyer. This captivating work is a set
of variations on the Pong Lang Dance, one of
Thailand's most popular melodies. The pong
lang is a suspended vertical wooden xylophone
whose keys are arranged upside down, with the
low notes on the upper end and the high notes
at the bottom. The melody uses the pentatonic
scale and is very simple in nature. The variations
expand on fragments of the original tune in a
variety of tempi and styles that make each
new change thrilling! After this exploration,
the original melody returns, gradually gaining
speed and energy as one would hear in a
traditional performance of this dance.

Although this is the original film music, it is
understated and remains at the medium-
easy level. The string parts contain lots of
divisi writing and there are parts for optional
flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and
harp. John Williams' treatment of the Israeli
national anthem gives a special reverence
and power to this beloved hymn.

blossom and its delightful scent. Players

accompaniment and optional percussion
creating the perfect musical landscape for
this multicultural offering. Very nice!
