John Berry. Recorded on the 1956 album Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, this jazz standard composed by pianist Red Garland adapts beautifully for beginning jazzers. With a moderate tempo, a riff-based melody, and non-threatening soloing on the blues progression, this is the perfect introduction to the music of Miles Davis for students and audiences. Rick Stitzel. Here's a great way to introduce the music of Count Basie to your young players. Carefully scored for young groups, this medium swing chart composed by Frank Foster and Count Basie trades the melody between the trumpets and saxes, includes a solo or soli for trumpet, and a brief shout chorus using tutti rhythms for the entire ensemble. Written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn for the title track of Frank Sinatra's1958 album, this tune epitomizes the cool sounds of the swing era. Here's a smartly scored version for young jazz ensembles with modest ranges, but with authentic style. Included is plenty of tutti ensemble playing along with short solos (or solis) for any sax or trumpet. A great way to teach swing, it's also playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. Included are suggested solos and scale/chord sheets in all keys. Based on a twelve-bar blues and built on syncopated melodic ideas that build in intensity when layered on top of each other, Crank It Up is a riff- based swing chart designed for young jazzers. With a cool bass line, a tuneful melody, call and response techniques, and suggested solos, this chart at the easiest level has it all! It's also playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations, includes fully notated rhythm section parts, and includes an optional part for vibes. Also featured are short solos for tenor and/or baritone saxes. What better way to introduce the music of Duke Ellington to your young jazzers than with this wonderfully scored arrangement by Michael Sweeney! Even at this easy level, this chart really swings and will sound great with limited rehearsal time. Your pianist gets a rare chance to shine as he or she is featured on the melody while the ensemble answers. Later, every section gets to play the melody and there's a written or ad lib solo for any saxophone. The final section starts softly with saxes alone, then builds as various layers are added. This bluesy, swinging chart is playable with as few as 3 saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone, piano and drums, and all solos have written parts provided. This belongs in every young jazz curriculum! Recorded by Peggy Lee in 1958, this sultry swing tune went on to become her signature song and has remained a popular standard. Paul Murtha's version for young players definitely retains the "cool" factor with finger snaps, sax melody and brass punches. Brief written solos are included for alto sax and trumpet, and it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. Look for clear and accurate rhythm section writing, optional vibes, flute, clarinet, horn, baritone horn and tuba parts are included. Van Morrison's hit is a natural for jazz ensemble. Now for bands at the easy level, this minor-key swinger is incredibly hip! The captivating melody moves through the sections of the band, sometimes in unison, sometimes in harmony, and the solo section is written for all the wind players, so you can have anyone or everyone play the written or ad lib solo. This tune is a perennial favorite with jazz lovers! 2701897 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 46.00 4 One for Daddy-O—Nat Adderley/arr. Vince Gassi. This great Nat Adderley composition is a swingin' chart at around 148 bpm with a sassy melody line, a written tenor sax solo, and easy brass ranges... all good! It sounds mature, yet it's easy to play and it's playable with optional reduced or expanded instrumentations. Highly recommended! 10452084 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . 40.00 The Pink Panther—Henry Mancini/arr. Paul Murtha. Instantly recognizable by all, here is one of the all-time great movie themes in a masterful arrangement for younger players. Paul Murtha does a great job of capturing the authentic sound of Mancini's classic from the familiar bass line, smooth tutti passages, and solo section for tenor sax or trumpet. It doesn't get any better than this! Suggested solos and scale/chord sheets in all keys are included. Optional reduced or expanded instrumentations.
