Blues & Swing
4 South Street Blues—Jeff Jarvis. Good
time swingin' is the best way to describe this
medium-easy chart set at around 138 bpm.
Whether your ensemble has some experience
or is in the developmental stages, this chart
is suitable for all performance situations,
particularly festivals. All horn sections get to
shine, including trumpet and trombone section
solis without rhythm, and a sax section soli
taking it to a discreet finale. All instruments
have interesting parts to play, the parts are well
articulated, the ranges are reasonable, and the
rhythm section parts are notated with chord
symbols provided. Due to the accessible blues
progression, everyone is encouraged to get into
the spotlight using the provided solo sheets.
Extremely nice, and highly recommended!

4 Andorian Blues—Rich Woolworth. This
up-tempo swing chart is the perfect way to
start any concert with a bang. The brass and
saxes have some really exciting ensemble
choruses between the written or improvised
solo sections featuring trumpet and trombone
over the blues in B-flat. The drummer gets a
chance to get his fill on before the key change
and recap of the melody to bring this chart to a
climactic finish. Highly recommended!

Blue Monk—Thelonious Monk/arr. Mark
Taylor. One of the signature tunes from jazz
legend Thelonious Monk is this quirky and iconic
blues! This great-sounding version for big bands
maintains the medium swing feel and "Monk-
isms" from the original, but the arranger's
own stamp of originality is exemplified with
crafty ensemble lines, rhythmic twists, and
some powerful full ensemble statements in
mixed meters. Solos are included for tenor,
trumpet and drums, along with marvelous
writing for the entire band. Suggested
solos are included along with chord/scale
sheets in all keys. Highly effective!

4 The Cardinal Shuffle—Bob Washut.
Respected composer and arranger Bob Washut
brings us this terrific swing/shuffle chart scored
for bands programming medium level repertoire.
Grade level appropriate brass ranges and
solid orchestration will help your band sound
its very best, plus audiences always enjoy a
good shuffle chart. The rhythm section parts
are primarily notated and frequent articulations
are offered for the horn sections. Solo space is
provided for 2nd Trumpet. A nice feature of this
piece is the way in which the roaring out chorus
suddenly shifts to a quiet ending. Very nice!

H Hey Pachuco!—arr. Shane Porter. Your
students and audiences will love this burning
swing tune made famous by Royal Crown Revue.
The groove is set up with a drum solo laying
down a Sing, Sing, Sing Krupa feel before the
band enters. A trumpet with plunger solo leads
into a sax soli section. Next, the trumpet section
is featured on a soli section before a half-time
feel gives the brass a chance to shine. Returning
to the original groove, a written solo for tenor
sax heightens the excitement. Finally, there's
an open drum solo before the band enters and
takes it on home. Pure excitement!

I Left My Heart in San Francisco—arr.
Quincy Jones. Quincy Jones wrote some
incredible arrangements on very popular tunes
for the Count Basie Orchestra. As recorded on
This Time By Basie, Quincy's arrangement of
I Left My Heart in San Francisco features great
interplay between the ensemble playing the
melody, and the piano with written solo fills. With
a tempo around 108 bpm, and a relaxed swing
feel, there's also short solo space for tenor
saxophone, and the ranges are very moderate.
This chart is playable by a lot of bands. It's a
true classic! Highly recommended!
