achieved such musical quality and expression!
This beloved and well-known hymn makes

but musically sensitive presentation. While
written for elementary bands, the lyrical

Celtic Air and March (Songs of Irish
Rebellion)—arr. Michael Sweeney. Here are
two contrasting melodies associated with
centuries of Irish conflict and turmoil. The
haunting ballad The Foggy Dew, composed
shortly after the Easter Rising of 1916, is
followed by the inspirational march The Minstrel
Boy, from the Irish Rebellion of 1798. A great-
sounding piece for young players, with an
historical connection!

Colliding Visions—Brian Balmages. A beautiful
melody and lovely suspensions begin this well-
written work. Playful themes then set the tone for
a bright allegro section. The two styles collide as
the allegro abruptly ends as the opening theme
returns and then fades to a whisper.

Edifice—Robert Sheldon. The opening majestic
block chords of this original represent the strength
and endurance of a beloved school building. A
faster and more tuneful main theme reflects the
youthful energy and optimism of the school's
many generations of students. This is a piece
your students will appreciate as it relates to their
own school!

superior "first serious piece" for your young

and passion you'd expect from the title!
Terrific teaching opportunities abound,

4 Ghosts of the Lost Ship—Tyler S. Grant.
This highly programmatic work tells the story
of buccaneer naval warfare and the ghosts
that linger to this day, haunting the seas and
all who pass through them. After an evocative
opening featuring numerous rattles, the
music becomes aggressive and relentless
as it portrays the credo-driven pirates and
their attacks during the height of their power.
Intense and extremely engaging!

4 Haunted Clocks—Brian Balmages. Simple
aleatoric devices and clever effects combine
to tell the story of a haunted clock factory and
its mischievous inhabitants. Beginning with
the sound of a single clock, additional clocks
seemingly come to life and join in, creating
a chorus of clock effects including wind-up,
grandfather and cuckoo clocks. The Dies Irae is
presented throughout in various altered versions,
adding to the somewhat diabolical nature of the
scene. Extremely unique and inventive!

—Gustav Holst/arr. Story. Historically important,
the suite this comes from is one of the first
pieces written exclusively for military bands.
This arrangement is based on the second theme
of the March, a very lyrical melody reminiscent
of British folk music. This accomplished setting
brings this cherished work to the stands of
your beginners, a most welcome addition to

century BC, Megiddo became the site of the
first recorded battle in history. The records of
this clash are scrawled in hieroglyphics in the
Hall of Annals at the Temple of Amun-Rah.
The music relies on the D phrygian mode
and primitive percussion sounds to capture
the essence of this historic battle.

the start, the music embodies the title in
a decidedly energetic manner. Pulsating
repeated eighth note rhythms contrast with
syncopated lines that drive the intensity and
suspense. The contrasting middle section
seems to materialize from nowhere, floating
along suspended in air, before the final energetic
statement brings about the rousing finish.
