Frank Foster's composition Shiny Stockings is one of the greatest jazz tunes ever for big band. Arranged by Greg Yasinitsky and scored at an accessible level, this chart has all the ingredients you expect plus a few short section solis and an ensemble shout chorus. This arrangement stays very close to the original, yet is more accessible for developing groups. Other features include a written solo for 2nd trumpet with the lead trumpet range to written A above the staff. This Basie classic belongs in every jazz library! Highly recommended! Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and love, made famous by Gene Krupa and the Benny Goodman Orchestra, only arranged for young players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that can be opened up for as much excitement as the crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will also sound full with reduced instrumentation or with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a showstopper! Highly recommended! 2702806 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 46.00 H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/trans. Mike Lewis. Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable swing tune of all time! This incredible transcription is as close as you're going to come to the original (which included clarinet and less than a full compliment of brass). This chart is scored for a standard 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm, but aside from that, it is the original as played by Benny Goodman. Every lick is there, including all the Gene Krupa drum breaks! This chart is a must for every big band's library! 2411486 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . M 58.00 n Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/arr. Vince Gassi. Accessible and fun to rehearse and play, this timeless swing tune contains all the key ingredients for a real crowd pleaser! It features the iconic drum pattern as it recurs throughout and the solid swing style that has become so familiar over the decades. Other features include easy brass ranges (with trumpet 1 to written E top space), a written drum solo and a big shout chorus as the modulation brings it all home. E 40.00 l Skyliner—Charlie Barnet/arr. Mark Taylor. At the peak of the big band era, saxophonist, composer and band leader Charlie Barnet recorded his famous version of Cherokee followed shortly by this second big hit. Treated here in a samba style, Skyliner features the saxes playing the smooth melody accompanied by a unison brass counterline. There is solo space for tenor sax and trumpet, followed by a sax soli and shout chorus for the full ensemble. Suggested solos and chord/ scale sheets in all keys are included. 10461378 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 45.00 H String of Pearls—Jerry Gray/arr. Mike Lewis. Arranger Mike Lewis has taken this swinging Glenn Miller hit and arranged it for easy jazz ensemble. His clever reworking of the solo sections and the descending harmony line makes this chart very playable for the young jazz musician. The trumpet 1 range is to written F top line and it features instrumentation options from 9 to 19 players. This is one of the ultimate crowd pleasers and it's ideal for any performance! 10049681 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . E 38.00 H Take the 'A' Train—Billy Strayhorn/arr. Vince Gassi. This chart swings all the way and is very playable by a young jazz ensemble. Arranger Vince Gassi offers a fresh take on this classic, yet captures the essence of this well-known Strayhorn composition made famous by Ellington. It's scored exactly right for younger players... not too difficult but with fun-to-play parts. With brief written solos for 1st alto sax and 1st trumpet, and easy ranges, it also has plenty of dynamics to teach. A superb chart you will play for years to come! Optional reduced or expanded instrumentation. 10066743 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . E 40.00 4 Things Ain't What They Used to Be—Mercer Ellington/arr. Rich Sigler. This is a jazz classic that every band should have in their library. The chart is a swing shuffle played at around 116 bpm and has a very familiar and catchy melody that flows smoothly from section to section. Also featured are written out solos for alto sax 1 and trumpet 2 and a lead trumpet range to written F-sharp top line. Optional parts are included for expanded instrumentation. A superb arrangement that is clever and effective in every way! 10355626 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 44.00 4 Whirly Bird—Neal Hefti/arr. Peter Blair. You may have heard Basie's band play this great Neal Hefti swinger, but this version is very accessible for younger players at around 166 bpm. The features include a written alto sax solo, a great sax soli, and well-notated rhythm section parts. Includes optional wind and vibes part, too! 10452088 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . ME 46.00 Legendary Billy Byers Charts! Billy Byers provided the Count Basie band with some of the best charts of the 50s and 60s. Here are three wonderful examples of Byers' artistry that still resonate today. They are available in more accessible, edited versions, as well as pro versions exactly as the Basie band performed them. Check them out on jwpepper.com! Count Me In (Edited Version)—arr. Billy Byers. Much like Basie's Li'l Darlin', this Billy Byers compostion exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest. There is also the contrast of a strong shout section before returning to the quieter approach. This was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Count Basie's Finest Hour. Set in a medium-slow swing feel, there are solos for trumpet and piano. In this edited version, the arrangement is almost exactly like the original, except the solos are written out, the high trumpet parts are adjusted, and the saxophone parts have been somewhat simplified. 10455850 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ME 48.00 In the Wee Small Hours (Edited Version)—arr. Billy Byers. As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on the album Frankly Basie: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, this arrangement by Billy Byers is a fantastic medium-slow swing chart. It's classic Basie with a soft, swinging melody, room for solos, and an "in-your-face" shout section which then returns to the quiet melody with a gentle ending. In this edited version, the solos are written out for tenor saxophone, trumpet and piano, the high brass parts have been modified, and the rhythm section parts are fully notated. Big band charts don't get any better than this! 10455858 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ME 48.00 The Second Time Around (Edited Version)—arr. Billy Byers. Much like the arrange- ments of Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band with some of their best music ever recorded. From their album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin' masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that will stretch the group to play both very loud and very soft, and is definitely an all-time favorite. In this edited version, the high brass parts have been eliminated, the trumpet and piano solos have been written out, and the rhythm section parts are fully notated.
