n Flat Tire Shuffle—Dean Sorenson. Lots of
unisons and moderate ranges make Flat Tire
Shuffle a perfect introduction to swing style.
Idiomatic rhythms and clean rhythm section writing
will make this one easy for young jazz bands. This
chart features completely flexible instrumentation
and is playable by four horns and rhythm section on
up to standard jazz ensemble format and beyond.
Regardless of the selected instrumentation, it
will sound full and complete. Young soloists can
improvise using only the notes of the concert Bb
mixolydian scale with the provided transposed
scale sheet. Any instrument can solo, and the
solo section can be repeated as many times as
necessary with backgrounds cued as desired.
For soloists wishing not to improvise, there is a
suggested solo included in all parts. Ultimately
flexible and highly recommended!!

l Hurricane Season—Troy Andrews/arr. John
Wasson. From the Trombone Shorty CD Back-
atown, this tune features the powerful underlying
pulse of a New Orleans second line feel. In this
exciting chart, the ensemble alternately screams
with the full band riffs, then settles into a simmering
rhythmic groove. A real treat to perform and hear!

n I Can't Stop Loving You—arr. Quincy Jones.
Every jazz fan knows it, loves it and has wished it
was in print! And now, this quintessential big-band
arrangement is finally available! As recorded by the
Count Basie Orchestra on their album This Time
by Basie: Hits of the 50s & 60s, Quincy Jones'
arrangement of I Can't Stop Loving You will bring
your audiences to their feet. Beginning with the
Count's rubato piano tremolo, this laid-back shuffle
chart features in-your-face ensemble writing at its
finest. There is short, written-out solo space for
trombone and piano, but mostly this chart simply
swings its tail off with the entire ensemble from
beginning to end! Never has a sad song sounded
so happy! Very highly recommended!

n I Left My Heart in San Francisco—arr. Quincy
Jones. Quincy Jones wrote some incredible
arrangements on very popular tunes for the Count
Basie Orchestra. As recorded on This Time By
Basie, Quincy's arrangement of I Left My Heart in
San Francisco features great interplay between the
ensemble playing the melody, and the piano with
written solo fills. With a tempo around 108 bpm,
and a relaxed swing feel, there's also short solo
space for tenor saxophone, and the ranges are
very moderate. This chart is playable by a lot of
bands. It's a true classic! Highly recommended!

4 Joshua—Victor Feldman/arr. Mark Taylor.
Composed by pianist Victor Feldman, this jazz
standard has been popular with recording artists
ever since Miles Davis famously introduced it back
in 1963. Written in an up-tempo swing style and
featuring the riff-like melody surrounded by full
ensemble statements, this well-crafted chart is
certain to become a staple in the repertoire for jazz
groups. Highly recommended!

H Sing, Sing, Sing—Louis Prima/trans. Mike Lewis.
Here it is...perhaps the most recognizable swing
tune of all time! This incredible transcription is as
close as you're going to come to the original (which
included clarinet and less than a full compliment
of brass). This chart is scored for a standard 5
saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythm, but
aside from that, it is the original as played by Benny
Goodman. Every lick is there, including all the Gene
Krupa drum breaks! This chart is a must for every
big band's library!

l Struttin' with Some Barbecue—arr. Rick
Stitzel. Here's a fresh take on one of the all-time
standards of early jazz composed by Lillian Hardin
Armstrong and Don Raye, and made famous by
Louis Armstrong. There's a hint of old time jazz
style mixed in with a more traditional straight-
ahead swing feel. Playable with optional reduced
or expanded instrumentations, this is a great way
to introduce a bit of jazz history with a chart that's
also fun to play.
