Behold the Star! (A Christmas Journey to
the Light of Christ)Lloyd Larson. The story of
faith is often reflected as a journey from darkness
to light. The Old Testament speaks of Israel living
in bondage and darkness, awaiting the light of the
promised Messiah, and His coming is punctuated
by light every step of the way: a bright angelic
host proclaiming the news to Judean shepherds
keeping watch over their flocks; a shining star
inviting Magi from afar to the young Christ-child
in an act of worship and praise. The book of John
refers to Jesus as the "light of all people." Jesus
even referred to Himself as the "light of the world."
It is this imagery of light that provides the unifying
thread for "Behold the Star!" This extended work
for choir, narrators, and congregation is a blend of
original and familiar carols. It may be performed in
a single worship experience or in smaller segments
over the weeks leading to Christmas. Contents:

A Blest Messiah Born (The Christmas Story
Through Timless Carols)Larry Shackley. The
Christmas season opens a portal in time through
which words and melodies from many centuries
flow into our busy modern lives. Composer Larry
Shackley skillfully blends some of the most beloved
ancient carols into a fresh, captivating retelling of
the story of Jesus' birth. It begins with God's eternal
plan of redemption, then starts the Christmas
story with the Annunciation. Along the way, Larry
presents delightful new settings of favorite carols
such as The Friendly Beasts; What Child is This?;
Ding Dong! Merrily on High; and Good Christian
Friends, Rejoice. "A Blest Messiah Born" contains
rich moments of reflection as well as high-spirited
rejoicing. It is enhanced by hints of Renaissance
rhythms and melodies, and the lyrics of the carols
flow together with the poetic narration to portray
the events of the nativity story. The entire work
lends itself to simple staging, adding characters
in each number to build a living manger scene.

Canticles in CandlelightJoseph M. Martin.
Advent is an expectant season of prophecy and
hope, filled with wonder and awe as we anticipate
the King's coming. "Canticles in Candlelight," the
newest musical from master arranger Joseph
Martin, continues that tradition, conveying the story
of Jesus' birth through music, scripture, narration
and flickering candles. This dramatic presentation
visually draws the listener in to a sacred place for
worship. The opening scripture (John 1:5) is spoken
by a narrator holding a single lighted candle: "The
light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
has not overcome it." The ensemble then enters
during the processional, their path through the
darkness strategically illuminated by flickering
candles. There are two possible conclusions for
this musical. One is a festive hymn montage
with optional congregation participation. The
other is a contemplative epilogue surrounded by
the choir singing the beloved carol Silent Night
while "passing the light." Detailed program and
performance notes are included, as well as options
for both full and chamber orchestration. Songs
include Prologue; Processional; Prepare and
Celebrate; Advent Longing; Come, Thou Long-
