this chart for proficient groups is ideal for festival

n Without a SongVincent Youmans/arr. Joe
Henderson. In 1992 Joe Henderson and Don
Sickler put together an all-star band to record
Without a Song and other charts that had
been sitting around for many years. The idea
was that the band would perform a concert of
these arrangements at Lincoln Center and then
later that week go into the studio to record.
The concert was broadcast by NPR complete
with interviews with Freddie Hubbard and Joe
Henderson. A second recording session was
held four years later where arrangements
by Bob Belden, Slide Hampton and Michael
Philip Mossman were recorded. In 1998 the
Joe Henderson Big Band album won a
Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble
Performance. All of these arrangements feature
lengthy solos for a tenor saxophone soloist.
Included are open solo sections so that any
number of soloists may be featured. These
arrangements will require significant time
to prepare, but they will be amazing for any
competition or festival! Ranges: Trumpets 1, 2 &
3 to G6, E6, C6; Trombone 1 to C5.

l You Must Believe in SpringMichel LeGrand/
arr. Vern Sielert. Vern Sielert has created a
marvelous arrangement of Michel LeGrand's
extremely popular melody You Must Believe in
Spring. Available in pro and edited versions, it's set
in a modern ECM swing feel played at about 176
bpm. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and
flugelhorn, and they are featured throughout with
extensive room for improvisation. The brass ranges
are moderate. The pro version requires ten brass
players, while the edited version requires eight;
otherwise the two are identical. This great chart

Whiplash—Hank Levy/arr. Erik Morales. Featured in the 2014 movie
"Whiplash," depicting the relationship between an ambitious student musician
and an abusive, yet respected instructor, this chart is a super-exciting work in
7/4 composed by Hank Levy and arranged by Erik Morales. Don't be intimidated
by the meter... it's challenging, but after a few minutes it feels quite natural and
the students will totally groove on it. The melody is stated by 2nd trumpet and
1st alto with solo space for both on easy chord changes. Articulation is critical
and the rhythm section may want to spend some quality time together. The lead
trumpet range is to written D above the staff. This is a unique but very desirable
chart to have in your library. You won't regret playing Whiplash!
