The Nearness of You—Hoagy Carmichael/
arr. Mark Taylor.
Although the first hit recording
of this enduring standard was by the Glenn Miller
Orchestra in 1940, Hoagy Carmichael's The
Nearness of You has remained popular through the
ages with recordings by countless performers. Set
here as a solo feature for flugelhorn or trumpet, the
soft Latin/ballad style and lush accompaniment
parts help make this one particularly attractive.
The solo is completely written, and the soloist can
improvise around the melody if desired. Here is an
ideal way to feature an emerging soloist!

I'm Getting Sentimental Over You—
George Bassman/arr. Rick Hirsch.
Here's
a wonderful update of Tommy Dorsey's classic
theme song. It's totally playable by high school
jazz bands, yet it also sounds great with college
and professional groups. It's written as a trombone
feature throughout (with optional solo parts included
for B-flat and E-flat instruments), although super-
high Dorsey-esque chops are not required. The
solo is mostly written with a section of improvising
around the melody and ad lib fills at the end.

It Ain't Easy Goin' Green—Jim Mahaffey.
It Ain't Easy Goin' Green is a delightful trombone
solo feature that honors the amazing talent of the
great trombonist Urbie Green. This chart is an
easygoing bossa nova with accessible parts for the
band and soloist. The solo is mostly written, but
there are a few places where some improv chops
are necessary. Highly melodic for both the ensemble
and soloist, the ranges are reasonable and the
band is featured as well as the soloist. Accessible
trombone solo features are rare, and it's a happy
coincidence that this one is so great! Included are
optional parts for flute, clarinet, horn in F and tuba.
