n Work SongNat Adderley/arr. Peter Blair. Here's
one of the best jazz classics ever in a minor key!
The original Nat Adderly gospel/rock-style recording
is the starting point for this accessible arrangement.
After the first time through the head featuring the
altos and trumpets, the stop-time section from
the original is used with the harmonized melody.
There's also a solid shout chorus that leads to a
soft ensemble passage before the written alto
sax solo. Arranged for full jazz ensemble, it'll also
sound great with a minimum of 3 saxes (AAT), 3
trumpets, 2 trombones, piano, bass and drums.
Highly recommended!

H 5.4 on the Richter ScaleLarry Neeck. 5.4 on
the Richter Scale is an upbeat modern-sounding
swing chart that really cooks! Hip 5/4 blues sections
are contrasted with a straight-ahead swingin' 4/4
blues, which gives this chart its unique appeal.
There are plenty of opportunities for your soloists to
improvise on 4/4 blues changes, or with the written
suggested solos included. It will sound great with
full or reduced instrumentation. Tired of the same
old blues? 5.4 on the Richter Scale is a really fresh
chart for your next concert!

n AfternoonPat Metheny/arr. Bob Curnow. Here
is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed chart in
the style of that famous Neal Hefti swing ballad! The
arrangement is subtle and easy to play, and there
are not a lot of pieces by Pat Metheny that swing
in this way. The arrangement suggests flugelhorns
throughout, although trumpets would work just fine.
There is solo space for alto saxophone and trumpet/
flugel. Very nice!

Artistry in RhythmStan Kenton/arr. Paul
Murtha. Composed and recorded by Stan Kenton in
the 1940s, Artistry in Rhythm became his signature
and a true classic from the big-band era. Paul
Murtha has skillfully adapted and truncated this for
younger players while maintaining the flavor and
energy of the original. Solo piano starts things off
followed by the iconic trombone solo in the medium
Latin section. The exciting double time swing section
features the entire ensemble, then the maestoso
theme returns to close things out. Impressive!

Attack of the Killer Tomatoesarr. Ralph Ford.
Crazy title? It's from the movie of the same name
and is a tongue-in-cheek swing chart adapted from
a much more difficult chart by Gordon Goodwin
for his Big Phat Band. Arranged by Ralph Ford for
developing players, it will be a hit with both the
band and the audience. No improvised solos, just
ensemble playing and some great section solis.
This will be a fun chart for any performance! Highly
recommended! Optional expanded instrumentation.

n Attitude AdjustmentLarry Barton. Here's a big,
solid swing-blues chart with attitude! It includes an
open section for the soloists of your choice, with

line really holds this chart together and gives it a
feel that is distinctive and powerful! Playable with
limited instrumentation, this will build confidence in
your developing players!

H Autumn LeavesJoseph Kosma/arr. Peter Blair.
This is a great old tune! Except...there's nothing
"old" sounding about it. It's a medium swing
version of a marvelous, often-played standard
that opens with an alto and trumpet duet and is
filled with tight ensemble punches. The saxes are
featured on a chorus and there is a written or ad lib
solo for piano.
2406361 Jazz Ensemble . . . . . . . . . . 45.00
n Baby Drives a Fast CarPaul Clark. There's
some solid swingin' going on here! The style
will make your kids feel like they're playing in a
professional big band, but with suggested solos
provided and playable by reduced instrumentation,
it's perfect for developing groups. Basic changes let
students work on their improv skills, too.

at writing charts at the medium-easy level. This
sizzling shuffle chart is a great teaching vehicle.
This accessible, melodic blues swinger features
nice ensemble passages, written or improvised
solos, and gets very exciting in the last chorus.
Great melody, great ensemble writing, great chart!

4 BackatownTroy Andrews/arr. John Wasson.
From Trombone Shorty's acclaimed CD Backatown,
here is the hot title cut arranged for big band in a
funky medium tempo. Combining the elements of
New Orleans second line and contemporary rock
styles, this unique chart features a blend of catchy
riffs, solid ensemble passages, and stop-time
breaks. There are short written or ad lib solos for
trumpet and tenor. This chart exudes a spirited and
unmistakable New Orleans swagger!

BackburnerCarl Strommen. This bright, bluesy
shuffle features a triplet rhythmic figure that is a
strong hook and opens with the rhythm section
setting the groove and a piano solo which may be
played as written or improvised. A great sax soli
follows with the opening statement accompanied
by stop-time figures in the rhythm section and is
answered by the brass. As the chart unfolds, the
melody is segmented and passed around the
horns. The solo section moves through several
ii-V progressions so your soloists will have an
opportunity to play over these essential jazz
changes. After a soft section, this fun swinger
builds big to the end. Highly recommended!
