Blues & Swing medium-easy
n Sack of Woe (Sack o' Woe)Julian Adderley/
arr. Mike Kamuf. This great tune by Cannonball
Adderley combines a soulful, straight-eighth groove
with a swing feel at a tempo anywhere from 138
to 160 beats per minute. Arranger Mike Kamuf
delivers another great chart that is super-fun to
play, easy to rehearse and very effective. Features
include written or ad lib solos for alto 1 and trumpet
2, lead trumpet range to written G, well notated
rhythm section parts, and a killer shout chorus.
It's a terrific chart! Our highest recommendation!
Optional expanded instrumentation.

n Saint Louis BluesW.C Handy/arr. Mike Collins-
Dowden. This very playable rendition of the early
blues classic opens with a sultry trumpet solo and
then breaks into a medium tempo shuffle with a
call and response section between the solo trumpet
and ensemble. Also featured are a nice sax section
soli, an open solo section on everybody's favorite
Bb blues changes, and a break strain. Nice chart
without being difficult!

n Salt PeanutsGillespie & Clarke/arr. Mark
Taylor. Playing jazz should be fun and this carefully
constructed arrangement for younger players will
certainly add the "fun" element! Alto and trumpet
take the melody at the top, then the rest of the band
joins in for a lively, swingin' romp! Here's a great
introduction to this revered standard!

4 ScootTim Fisher. Rich Woolworth's bluesy
medium-tempo shuffle chart is the perfect tune for
developing ensembles to pay their dues on the blues
in F. There's ad lib solo space for alto, tenor, trumpet
or trombone that features a big ensemble build up to
the solo to give the soloists some extra confidence.
Next the tune goes through a nice ensemble section
featuring unison rhythms throughout the band with
short piano solo licks in between. With limited ranges
(the lead trumpet never goes above F-sharp), limited
brass instrumentation (three trumpets and three
trombones), and easy rhythms, this chart is great for
almost any performance. Additional features include
a modulation and nice dynamic contrasts. Scoot
swings hard in an uncomplicated way!

n The Second Time Around (Edited Version)
arr. Billy Byers. Much like the arrangements of
Quincy Jones, Billy Byers provided the Basie band
with some of their best music ever recorded. From
their album Frankly Speaking: Count Basie Plays
the Hits of Frank Sinatra, Byers' arrangement
of The Second Time Around is a slow swingin'
masterpiece. This is a great dynamic chart that
will stretch the group to play both very loud and
very soft, and is definitely an all-time favorite. In
this edited version, the high brass parts have been
eliminated, the trumpet and piano solos have been
written out, and the rhythm section parts are fully
notated. Every band should have this in their library!

Shiny StockingsFrank Foster/arr. Sammy
Nestico. Adapted from the version he penned for
The Count Basie Orchestra, Sammy Nestico brings
the signature style and familiar strains to this
fabulous version for developing bands. The solo
spots for piano are completely notated and the tutti
writing for full ensemble is the best there is!

H
Sing, Sing, SingLouie Prima/arr. Victor Lopez.
Yep, this is the Sing, Sing, Sing you know and
love, made famous by Gene Krupa and the Benny
Goodman Orchestra, only arranged for young
players by Victor Lopez. The classic drum solo that
can be opened up for as much excitement as the
crowd can stand, along with a written-out tenor
solo, reasonable brass ranges and lots of meaty
ensembles keep this great chart exciting. It will
also sound full with reduced instrumentation or
with the optional, non-jazz band parts. It's still a
showstopper! Highly recommended!

n Six String ShuffleScott Stanton. Has your
guitar player been waiting for a chance to be
in the spotlight? Then this cookin' blues shuffle
chart is just what you need! The guitar helper part
includes both a written solo and a tablature version
of the same solo. There's also an optional open
solo section that can be opened up for as many
players as desired. Solid background figures by the
ensemble give this a great big sound that will make
your budding B.B. Kings and Eric Claptons sound
like superstars! Highly recommended!

SolarMiles Davis/arr. Rick Stitzel. One of the
most enduring compositions from Miles Davis' early
career is this medium swing tune recorded on the
1954 album Walkin'. Rick Stitzel uses some nifty
phrase extensions in the beginning, then alternates
the full ensemble with statements by a small group
in this terrific chart for younger players. The solo
space is for trumpet and tenor sax with suggested
solos and chord/scale sheets in all keys included.

South Street BluesJeff Jarvis. Good time
swingin' is the best way to describe this medium-
easy chart set at around 138 bpm. Whether
your ensemble has some experience or is in the
developmental stages, this chart is suitable for
all performance situations, particularly festivals.
All horn sections get to shine, including trumpet
and trombone section solis without rhythm, and
a sax section soli taking it to a discreet finale. All
instruments have interesting parts to play, the parts
are well articulated, the ranges are reasonable, and
the rhythm section parts are notated with chord
symbols provided. Due to the accessible blues
progression, everyone is encouraged to get into the
spotlight using the provided solo sheets. Extremely
nice, and highly recommended!

n Southside ShuffleHoward Rowe. The tenors
and trombones take the lead and build to a
wide-open, powerhouse finish in this good-time
shuffle chart! It includes an open solo section for
instruments of choice with written or ad lib solos.
Southside Shuffle is a hard-biting, R & B flavored
chart that really kicks!

St. Thomas (Little Big Band)Sonny Rollins/
arr. Mark Taylor. Plenty of solid tutti ensemble
scoring is featured in this arrangement for small
group of Sonny Rollins' familiar Latin standard.
The solo section can be opened up for any player
and a tasty unison ensemble chorus follows.
Suggested solos and scale/chord sheets are
included. Highly recommended! Instrumentation: 3
saxes, 2 trumpets, 1 trombone plus rhythm section.
Optional additional parts are included for alto, tenor
& trombone.

H Star Spangled Bannerarr. Paul Clark. Although
this piece is not usually associated with jazz bands,
this arrangement works so well it can appropriately
be included in any jazz concert. It's also invaluable
to have in the files for those "emergency" situations
where a jazz group is called upon to perform our
National Anthem. It includes just the right elements
to give it a jazz flavor, yet maintains the dignity and
reverence of the original. While it is harmonically
jazzy, it is rhythmically traditional and can serve
as accompaniment for audience singing. It is also
playable with reduced instrumentation. If your
jazz ensemble plays for basketball games, this is
perfect. A wise investment for all jazz programs!
Highly recommended!

by without playing this one that sounds great with
electric or acoustic bass. Superb chart!

that young players could experience Brubeck's
"Third Stream" jazz?

n That's How We RollGordon Goodwin/arr. Peter
Blair. Arranger Peter Blair gets it right on this recent

written or improvised solos for alto and trumpet

feature, the trumpets get most of the spotlight
melody lines with lead trumpet range to written G

staff. This great shuffle chart also includes parts for
optional expanded instrumentation. It's good to play

contains well-crafted ensemble and soli writing.
The open solo section for any soloist uses only the
chord changes from the F concert scale, providing
confidence for young soloists. Very nice!

n Touchin' All the BassesAndy Clark. It's time to
let your bass player get some of the spotlight! This
cool chart is written in three parts, a funky rock,
a slow triple blues, and a hot shuffle. Designed
to showcase the bass player, the band parts
complement the soloist, but allow the bass to be
heard. Each of the sections can be opened for bass
or other solos as desired, or it can be performed
straight through, exactly as written. A very unique
and useful chart!

4 Triple PlayGeorge Shutack. As the title
suggests, successfully subdividing the triplet on all
swing eighth note figures is the key to an exciting
performance of this swinging original. The strong
melody at first stated in unison by an alto, trumpet
and trombone trio, an open written or improvised
solo section, and solid ensemble scoring are
combined to create a chart that will be a definite
bright spot in any program. The saxophone soli after
the solos is bluesy and right on target, then the full
band shouts on the way home. Triple Play is an
accessible, hard-swingin' chart that all will enjoy!
