H Moanin'Charles Mingus/arr. Sy Johnson. This

open solo section, and an infectious bari sax line
that drives the whole piece. Serious jazz for
serious bands!

4 An Open and Shut CasePaul Baker. Gifted
composer Paul Baker has crafted a bright swing
chart that has it all! It's a bright swinger, has tons
of energy, features "blues with a bridge" solos for
tenor and trumpet, an eight-bar drum interlude,
has a very cool "rhythm out" section after the solos,
and an outstanding sax soli. Lots of independent
section work lets each part of the ensemble shine.

n OrnithologyParker & Harris/arr. Greg
Yasinitsky. Greg Yasinitsky has set Charlie
Parker's great bebop tune to swing at about
172 - 200 bpm. Featuring plenty of excellent
sax section solis, brass solis, solo spaces
(suggested written solos included) for tenor sax,
and piano, this is fine big band swing chart on
a great tune. The lead trumpet range goes up
to written B-flat above the staff and optional
flute and vibraphone parts are included. This is
essential jazz repertoire, and this chart is very
highly recommended!

n PatienceFred Sturm. This original chart
commissioned and written by Fred Sturm features
drums throughout in this modern swing tune that
winds through many different feels. Utilizing both
brushes and sticks, this wonderful arrangement
features the drummer by providing interplay with
the ensemble and plenty of solo space. This is
a very clever and understated tune with quite
playable ensemble parts and beautiful writing
that will take your band and audiences on an
exhilarating musical journey!

l Pretty Little Niedaarr. Don Sebesky. As
recorded by the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra, this
is one of those charts that escaped notice for many
years. The melody is stated by alto saxophone and
trumpet, weaving in and out of various textures
created by muted brass. Alternating even eighth
note and swing feels in 3/4 meter, it begins to
accelerate and rise at a climactic point where the
melody is once again taken over by a solo trumpet
and alto saxophone. Surprisingly, the brass ranges
are moderate. If you wish to program a piece
having a very unique flavor and great audience
appeal, this is the chart!

soloists can improvise over the chords provided
in the respective parts or can perform the written
solos as indicated. Written ranges: Trumpet 1 to Bb;
Trombone to G; Alto Sax to E. Highly recommended!

4 Terry TownPaul Baker. As the title suggests,
Terry Town is a fun bebop chart in the joyful spirit
and tradition of the late, great Clark Terry. Each
section gets its turn in the spotlight, saxes at first,
trumpets on the bridge, and trombones on solo
backgrounds. A trumpet solo is followed by a piano
(or guitar) solo, and then the trombones and bass
trade fours with the drums. The trumpets join in
with the guitar and lead to a big flag-waving shout
chorus that features the lead trumpet, who sails
above the ensemble and gets the last word at the
end of the chart. The trumpet range is to written
high C. Another Paul Baker chart that has it all!
