and fades away. Carefully constructed for young
singers, this selection is a perfect introduction to
minor key singing and includes a variety of notated
body percussion sounds imitating the pitter-patter
of raindrops.

Listen to the RainStephen L. Lawrence. This
imaginative piece will captivate your audience with
the sounds and sensations of a thunderstorm.
The whispered opening and lyrical melody set the
mood for an intriguing moment when the audience
actually becomes part of the performance. One
or more singers, the Rain Leaders, lead them
in creating a remarkably realistic-sounding
thunderstorm (using body percussion). From the
hush of the wind preceding the rain to the climactic
crash of the thunder, the effect is breathtaking!
Performance notes and ideas are included, along
with an opening narration.

The MoonAndy Beck. Written especially for
two-part choirs, this inquisitive piece features
lyrical unisons, echo singing, and sensible duet
harmonies. A haunting piano motive represents the
moon throughout as the childlike text ignites your
choir's collective imagination. "O moon, shining
in the night... come again tomorrow night..." A
marvelous, luminous nocturne for young voices!
Highly recommended!

l Music Alone Shall Livearr. David M.
Kellermeyer. Canons are great for developing part
singing. Music Alone Shall Live is based on the
German canon Die Musici. This is easy enough to
teach your beginning SATB choir legato singing;
beautiful, supported tone, attention to word and
syllable stress, and the production of tall, unified
vowels. There's not a better way to begin the
school year than with a canon like this - it is a
programming must!

4 Music in the WaterRuth Morris Gray. This
lesser-known poem by 19th-century poet Lura
Anna Boies celebrates the inherent artfulness in
nature. Simple but effective echo effects in the
voices imitate the sound of rippling waters, while
conservative vocal ranges allow every voice to
sound its best. "There is music in its clear and
crystal beauty, rippling down the mountainside..."

the pretty melody makes the message true. "The
music within us can be a friend when we are
young. The music within us is part of all that we
become..." Highly recommended!

"A star sailed by on silver-tipped wings under the
moon and midnight gleam;...So I whispered my wish
and watched it go by, sailing above me it slipped

comes to be born on a star with silver-tipped wings."

folk-like traditional canon forms the basis of this
piece which features alternate English and Latin
text. It's excellent for reinforcing part-singing skills,
and for teaching your students that canons are
invaluable resources for both school and church
use, performed throughout the history of music.
Found in the vocal and instrumental works of the
great composers, they are also part of the folk
music traditions of many lands.

The Race is RunJay Althouse. Remembering
the 2013 Boston Marathon, this reverent tribute
is an exceptional a cappella selection for concert
groups. Throughout the brief ABA format,
occasional dissonance resolves into lush choral
harmony. And at the end, a final unison note
symbolizes our unity.

4 The Rain and the RainbowMary Donnelly &
George L.O. Strid. This lilting piece for beginning
SSA choirs reflects on the sights and sounds of
nature. The part-writing is easy, with accessible
ranges, and an optional flute obbligato adds nice
tonal color. The Christina Rossetti texts upon which
this is based have a ring of familiarity: "Rain, rain,
go away; come again another day... Boats sail on
the rivers, and ships sail on the seas..."

n RainstormRoger Emerson. "Sound painting"
is what this creative piece is all about, and it
achieves a magical effect! The choral parts for
either three-part mixed or SATB voices are very
simple, while much of the effect is produced by the
piano and a small group of percussion instruments
(cymbals, glockenspiel, timpani, shaker & triangle).
The simple text describes the excitement of the
approaching storm: "Something's coming...I can
tell. From the heavens, from the well. Moving
Eastward, from the West. Dark and angry; will it
rest?" Finally, the chorus makes the sound of falling
rain with random finger snaps. This is very special!
Highly recommended!

H Rhythm of the RainJerry Estes. With optional
parts for woodblock, shaker, triangle, drum and
other Orff instruments, this is a terrific example of
tone painting! "Listen to the rhythm of the falling
rain..." Everything about this piece-the repetitive
text, the stepwise melody, the piano part, the
rhythm instruments-reinforces the musical image
of falling rain. Add the descant and, before your
singers know it, they'll be singing a triple partner
song! Superb!
