H African AdventureRobert Sheldon. When
it comes time to celebrate the musical colors of
Africa, combine forces with your string group and
percussion ensemble on this stylish concert work
for the developing ensemble. Repetitive rhythms
and a catchy melodic hook propel the piece
forward as it develops momentum and dramatic
flair. Substitute Orff instruments for the melodic
percussion for an even more authentic timbre.
A guaranteed favorite!

l Allegheny LegendMarcia Stockton. Picture
Pennsylvania's natural beauty as it was seen by
the pioneers: a misty morning, vast expanses
of tree-filled wilderness, the seemingly endless
Allegheny River stretching far into the distance. The
energetic main theme depicts these sturdy settlers'
aspirations and explorations.

American Fiddle Triptycharr. Tim McCarrick.
This medley of three fantastic folk fiddle tunes, set
in a totally authentic style, will delight players and
audiences. Arkansas Traveler; Fire on the Mountain
and Devil's Dream are featured in the violins and
violas with great accompaniment parts for the cellos
and basses. Highly recommended!

Ashokan Farewell (from The Civil War)arr.
Calvin Custer. The simple, memorable theme from
the acclaimed PBS series makes excellent concert
fare. Calvin Custer's realistic treatment includes
the easy violin solo, piano and percussion. This is
technically quite easy, but very emotional.

H Blue Fire FiddlerSoon Hee Newbold. Energetic,
exciting and fun, are the words that best describe
this kickin' fiddle tune. This fast and furious fiddling
piece sounds much harder than it really is. Riffs,
finger patterns and bowings are very idiomatic and
lend themselves to fast playing. This is sure to be
the hit of the concert!

Bluegrass Fiddle FrenzyBill Monroe/arr.
Phillips. In celebration of Bill Monroe's 100th
birthday, perform this high energy, true blue
arrangement of Scotland and Big Mon, two of
Monroe's standards. Scotland evokes memories
of the Scottish roots of Appalachian music leading
into the technical wizardy of the tune named for the
"Father of Bluegrass" himself.

Danny Boyarr. Harry Alshin. Lovely, inter-
weaving countermelodies create a rich inner texture
in this beautiful arrangement of the timeless love
song. Sensibly placed in the key of D Major, this
beautiful arrangement will have lasting appeal
with your students and audiences, and will be
an especially good choice for combined festival
orchestra performance. Gorgeous! Recorded by
Michigan State University Orchestra on the CD,

Danny Rocks (A Celtic Explosion)Bob
Phillips. A trio of terrific tunes! An air, a jig, and a
reel done in a Celtic rock style! The plaintive sounds
of Danny Boy, also known as Londonderry Air starts
things off. Next, the Swallowtail jig begins with an
intense rhythmic pattern where 6/8 clashes with
3/4 and what sounds like a Bodhran (Irish hand
drum) is actually half the cello section using their
instruments for rhythm! Following that rollicking jig
is a very suspenseful 20-bar transition leading to
the very popular reel, Drowsy Maggie. The energy
level rises throughout and the rock beat intensifies
making this a great concert closer!

Donegal Fiddlesarr. Tim McCarrick. "Authentic"
is the word for this! It features two reels from County
Donegal, The Boys of Malin and The Gravel Walks,
both of which are played often in Ireland. The style
is brisk and exciting. All the players get great parts,
from the basses imitating the Irish hand drum
to cello and viola features in the first tune, to the
violins playing in unison or octaves, racing to the
end. Performed separately or as a set, it's a terrific
opener or encore number! Highly recommended!

Hauntingly beautiful, this arrangement in E minor of
an old Irish air brings sweeping melodies and rich
harmonies together in a way that only Atwell can
do. Shifting required for cello and bass sections.

H
Ear IgamiRichard Meyer. Ear-igami is a
fascinating musical tribute to the ancient Japanese
art of paper folding. Instead of a bow, each performer
uses a piece of paper to make sounds and to "play"
their instrument. Your audience will be entranced as
they watch and hear the variety of effects possible in
this charming set of pentatonic variations. Premiered
by the composer's middle school orchestra, this
music is sure to intrigue high school and adult
musicians as well. There's nothing else like it!

Fantasia on a Theme from ThailandRichard
Meyer. This captivating work is a set of variations
on the Pong Lang Dance, one of Thailand's most
popular melodies. The pong lang is a suspended
vertical wooden xylophone whose keys are
arranged upside down, with the low notes on the
upper end and the high notes at the bottom. The
melody uses the pentatonic scale and is very simple
in nature. The variations expand on fragments of
the original tune in a variety of tempi and styles
that make each new change thrilling! After this
exploration, the original melody returns, gradually
gaining speed and energy as one would hear in a
traditional performance of this dance.

opportunities for optional improvised solos.

H Folk Tune and Fiddle DancePercy Fletcher.
A long-time favorite for festival and contest, Percy
Fletcher's two-movement suite has been a choice
teaching piece for school orchestras. In true English
folk style, the first movement has multiple sections
in varying styles and meters, and the second
movement is rhythmic, energetic fiddle writing at
its best.

n Hatikvah (from "Munich")John Williams.
Here is the authentic edition direct from John
Williams and exactly as played in the film. Although
this is the original film music, it is understated and
remains at the medium-easy level. The string parts
contain lots of divisi writing and there are parts
for optional flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn,
and harp. John Williams' treatment of the Israeli
national anthem gives a special reverence and
power to this beloved hymn.

One of the most memorable moments in the
movie "Titanic" was the Irish dancing scene in
the steerage section of the ship. The group Gaelic
Storm provided the recording for the film, heard on

orchestra will love the energy of this version that
includes piano and percussion throughout to really
enhance those catchy Celtic rhythms! Irresistible!
