Dark AdventureRalph Ford. It's ghostly! It's
creepy! Your orchestra will love it! From the driving
opening motives to the quirky gypsy-sounding
theme, this is haunted-house music at its best! You
can play this with either full or string orchestra, but
the percussion section is really vital and should be
used in both cases. This is recommended and will
thrill and delight your audience! A winner!

Engines of ResistanceLarry Clark. You will
want to program this thrilling music often! As the
title implies, there is dramatic tension between
opposing forces in the orchestra: a light ostinato
pattern opposes a heavy, aggressive melody; bursts
of percussion ring out against quieter moments in
the orchestra, and all these conflicting elements
come together for an incredible finish! Can be
performed as strings and percussion, or as a full
orchestra. A contest winner!

MillenniumRichard Meyer. Millennium,
recorded this year by Alfred for the first time,
was first released in 1998. Winner of the 1998
N.S.O.A. composition contest, this contemporary-
sounding overture is extremely powerful and
full of emotion from beginning to end. After a
foreboding introduction, the heroic main theme
is introduced by the brass section in unison,
accompanied by the entire orchestra in a
percussive, marcato style. A lyrical subordinate
theme of extreme beauty follows, first stated
by unison cellos, then picked up by the entire
orchestra. The third and final section is a wild and
energetic march, pitting brass against woodwinds
and strings, leading into a final, majestic
restatement of the main theme. Richard Meyer's
colorful and imaginative scoring features every
section of the symphony orchestra, resulting in a
wonderfully mature-sounding, yet playable, tour
de force' for the student orchestra.

Second StormRobert W. Smith. Inspired
by the devastating hurricane season during the
summer of 2004, this begins with a melodic
"calm before the storm" introduction; and as
the fury of Mother Nature is unleashed, the work
develops using strong unison impacts with driving
rhythmic figures to capture the intensity of the
event in sound. Your intermediate orchestra will
sound big and bold.

The Great Locomotive ChaseRobert W.
Smith. On April 12, 1862, one of the most daring
exploits of the Civil War occurred: the theft of the
Confederate supply train called The General. What
followed became one of the most dramatic events
of the war. Robert W. Smith has captured that
excitement and set it to music that will thrill your
audience and inspire your players! The orchestra is
so expertly used that the listeners can easily imagine
the events as they hear train whistles, the clang

folk tune and turns it into an extended concert
masterwork! Hatikvah is the national anthem of Israel.

Rites of TamburoRobert W. Smith. Explosive,
powerful and dramatic, here's a work that your
orchestra can really sink their teeth into! Entrancing
instrumental colors burst into splashes of energy
from the brass and rhythm sections, biting
dissonances abound, and a constant surge of
excitement flows through the piece. There's even
a measure where the brass are invited to "pick-a-
note" as they crescendo into a resolving chord... a
really neat effect! If you want to light a fire under
your players (and your audience, too), then Rites Of
Tamburo is a top choice.
