Original Concert Works very easy
Jasmine Flowerarr. Douglas Wagner. Here is
a very beautiful setting of the traditional Chinese
folk song Molihua. This tune is a vital part of
Chinese New Year celebrations and was featured
at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The soothing
pentatonic melody is reminiscent of the simple
beauty of the lovely white jasmine blossom and its
delightful scent. Players will encounter no technical
impediments in performance, with the independent
piano accompaniment and optional percussion
creating the perfect musical landscape for this
multicultural offering. Very nice!

Kabuki DanceRichard Meyer. This makes a
great change-of-pace at any performance! The
Japanese sound, brought about with a pentatonic
scale, moves from D major to B minor and offers
colors and textures rarely found in pieces for
young orchestras. Written in ABA form, the work
begins with a delicate pizzicato section, followed
by a more aggressive minor section, then returns
to the opening for a satisfying close. While very
simple note-wise, this piece offers outstanding
opportunities for improvement in ensemble playing,
rhythms, dynamics and pizzicato tone production.
A nice choice!

4 King Henry's ChoiceKeith Sharp. In the
style of medieval dance, this authentic setting
transports all to the time of Henry VIII. Though his
court was infamous as well as lavish, music and
dance were a central part of courtly life. With many
opportunities for technical development, all parts
remain in 1st position.

n KonekoKeiko Yamada. Koneko uses a simple
pentatonic tune to depict the innocent and playful
nature of a little kitten. The piece uses very limited
musical and technical material for the players. The
pentatonic tune begins with the first violins only,
and then the tutti orchestra. A secondary theme is
added with the celli taking the lead line. Different
variations of the main tune are developed, and the
lower strings get a chance with some important
melodic material. A spectacular piece for beginners!
