Elements in Time - Developing—Danny Raymond. Master snare
drummer Danny Raymond's Elements in Time series starts off with the
DEVELOPING edition. In this collection, Raymond delivers three intermediate
level snare drum solos designed to educate and entertain, qualities which are
trademark Danny! In Uncommon Ground, the performer must navigate a series
of five-beat phrases. Stick clicks, rim shots, and simple visual embellishments
make the piece fun to watch and to play. The Waco Kid is essentially a shout-
out to fans of the Mel Brooks classic comedy "Blazing Saddles." The wild west,
galloping horses, and big hats all come to mind when listening. Technically
speaking, there are a handful of flams to contend with and two moderate triplet
roll passages to challenge young cowhands. Transformer, as the title implies,
revolves around the performer switching the playing grip back and forth between
matched and traditional. Performers will encounter a number of paradiddle-like
sticking variations as well as some quick metering changes and short, strictly-
metered buzz roll passages. Lastly, there are some fun visual elements that will
engage an audience without being overly difficult. A nice, tight collection!

Elements in Time - Groovy—Danny Raymond. The GROOVY edition
of Danny Raymond's Elements in Time series is all about exposing snare
drummers to different grooves. From South America to New Orleans, there's
a little something for everyone here! Loosely translated as a "change of pace,"
Cambio de Paso is a perfect introduction to many of the ways a snare drum
can be used to create Latin-flavored rhythms and textures. The drum plays the
dual role of both conga and timbale while rim clicks and muted strokes take the
form of cascara and mambo patterns. Mammoth requires two differently tuned
snare drums: one with with the snares off, and the other with the snares on. The
interplay between the two drums creates a mesmerizing tribal-esque sound that
continues from start to finish with very little pause and frequent meter changes.
In What's My Line?, Raymond get his crawfish broil on with a nifty solo based
around New Orleans second line drumming concepts. The performer will be
called upon to play with a slight swing of the 16th notes while strolling through
syncopated accent patterns, creatively placed rim clicks, and jazz ride-based
right-hand patterns. Fun stuff!

Elements in Time - Mastering—Danny Raymond. At the pinnacle of Danny
Raymond's Elements in Time snare solo series is the MASTERING edition. This
collection of three competitive solos for snare drum is for advanced players looking
to showcase their abilities and then some. Inspired by New York radio show host
Jean Shepherd, Excelsior! will leave you humming along with the unmistakable
rhythmic melodies present throughout the piece. This solo will demand a lot of
control through a myriad of hybrid flam passages and will also challenge the
performer with some matched-to-traditional grip changes. The Natural is an
upper-echelon solo for a drum corps-level player. Although the piece contains a
lot of rudimental meat, the march tempo and backbeat groove elements give it a
listenability not often found in modern marching snare solos. Warwick is not to be
attempted by anyone without good health coverage. Masterful!

Elements in Time - Traditional—Danny Raymond. The TRADITIONAL
Elements in Time edition is for those wishing to brush up on their old-school
chops in a new-school way. As a true rudimental drum corps aficionado, Danny
Raymond is certainly qualified to deliver some classic rudimental solo, but also
equally qualified to put his own mark on each one of them. The Imperial is a bold
work for rope tension snare drum that contains its share of old-school rudiments,
stick tricks, and phrasings. Legendary rudimental bass drummer Nick Attanasio
wrote two optional bass drum parts, allowing the piece to be performed as a solo,
a duet, or a trio. In Mosaic, Danny outdoes himself with creative, flow-oriented
rudimental writing that is both fun to play and challenging to play well. Lovers
of the classics will recognize a familiar quote in this solo, albeit a displaced one!
Psychedelic Relic is a fast-paced barrage of 16th-note diddles, sextuplet singles,
six-stroke rolls, and flam rudiments that will keep any rudimental player happy.
This collection takes you to school with class!
