Appalachian Dreams—Roland Barrett.
Two English folk songs, popular in the southern
Appalachians during the early years of American
history, provide the melodic material for this epic
work. Going to Boston and Soldier, Won't You Marry
Me? are heard throughout in various forms. After the
very peaceful and tranquil opening, a bold, powerful
statement is made, then leads to a dreamlike,
mesmerizing section. With a powerful percussion
contribution, the ensemble then combines forces,
driving to a resounding conclusion.

Arikara—James Meredith. Inspired by the
Arikara tribe of Native Americans based in North
Dakota, this work is an evocative piece opening
with a plaintive flute solo supported by an exotic
percussion backdrop. The piece features a chorale-
like statement before moving to the faster and
more rhythmic main section. Mixing early American
imagery with striking dissonances, this is an effective
and unique offering with limited technical demands.

The balalaika is essentially
a three-string Russian guitar known for the

The Banks of the Delaware—
Stuart P. O'Neil.
A distinct blend of woodland and
prairie, the northeast region of Kansas is among the
most beautiful in the state, and the Delaware River
is one of many meandering through its lush and
rolling landscape. This piece opens with a clarinet
solo that builds into the full ensemble. This lyrical
setting is reminiscent of American folk music. Ample
doubling of parts is provided for bands with less
than ideal instrumentation.
